Mecca/Makkah

[edit]

If you look at Talk:Mecca/Archive02#Spelling in title and within article, Talk:Mecca/Archive02#Poll: Spelling of Mecca / Makkah and Talk:Mecca#Makkah or Mecca you can see that Wikipedia:Consensus currently is to use Mecca. If you wish to change the consensus then please start a new section at the bottom of Talk:Mecca. I would also point out that should the consensus now be that Makkah is to be used there are some uses of Mecca that can't be changed;

  1. The names of images File:Makkah, Saudi Arabia locator map.png must be File:Mecca, Saudi Arabia locator map.png. Note that the first does not exist and will only show as a red link. At the same time blue links to other article should not turn red just because the spelling is changed. The red linking also caused the template at the bottom of the page to stop working.
  2. Things like "...but the spelling ''Mecca'' remains in common use. Another alternative is ''Meccah''.<ref>''Six Months in Meccah'', John Keane, Tinsley Brothers, 1881.</ref>" which you changed to "but the spelling ''Makkah'' remains in common use. Another alternative is ''Makkah''.<ref>''Six Months in Makkah'', John Keane, Tinsley Brothers, 1881.</ref>" and "{{cite book |last= Burton |first= Richard Francis |authorlink= Richard Francis Burton |title= Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah & Makkah — Volume 1 |origyear= 1855 |url= http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/4657 |format= [[Text file]] |accessdate= 2008-10-22 ." which you changed to "{{cite book |last= Burton |first= Richard Francis |authorlink= Richard Francis Burton |title= Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah & Makkah — Volume 2 |origyear= 1855 |url= http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/4658 |format= [[Text file]] |accessdate= 2008-10-22". Not only does the first one make no sense after being changed but in both cases you change the proper title of a book to a made up title. # The links to artiles about the city on other language Wikipedia's must remain the same. Changing them may cause the links to stop working and cause confusion to the reader. In short. Discuss the name change first and then if consensus is with you do the change correctly. ~~~~ == December 2015 == {{subst:User:BracketBot/inform|diff=697134986|page=Kolar district|by= by modifying 1 "[]"s|debug=(0, -1, 0, 0)|list=yes|remaining=*<nowiki>Mustafa]] - the Richest person of [[Kolar]] in early 1887, and the Founder of Clock Tower Circle] in Kolar.
