Player articles

Hi, when updating player articles could you refrain from referring to subjects by their first name; that's too informal for an encyclopaedia. And could you comment out squad templates for players who have been loaned out, rather than remove them? It saves time when updating articles for the players' return to their parent clubs. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 00:15, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Shaun, could you please read Matty's message here and follow his advice. Your edit on DJ Campbell is a good example of this. JMHamo (talk) 17:08, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Template:2013–14 Eredivisie table

Hi. I saw that when you updated Template:2013–14 Eredivisie table you accidently moved the lines with {{fb cl2 qr... and those lines should not be moved. The result was that the third placed team was going to Champions league and the second placed team to Europa League. Next time make sure to only move the line containing {{fb cl team.... Otherwise you made a good job updating the table. QED237 (talk) 09:32, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

If you read the template info and documentation you see that you must also update the positions in helper template Template:2013–14 Eredivisie table/p used when showing parts of the table. QED237 (talk) 13:53, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
Once again update the helper template, which you missed doing on the evening the 19th. QED237 (talk) 16:05, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
I GIVE YOU TEN MINUTES TO UPDATE Template:2013–14 Eredivisie table/p or warning templates will start flying. QED237 (talk) 23:57, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
The league table templates are constructed so that they can be shown in full (all rows) on chosen main articles such as 2013–14 Eredivisie. When the table is used on the club season articles such as 2013–14 Vitesse season#League table there is no need to show the full table so the table is truncated. The helper template {{(template name)/p}} (in this case {{2013–14 Eredivisie table/p}}) is then used to show the correct lines for the truncated table. So if the positions of the helper template is not updated the part of the table shown on the season articles will be wrong and the wrong rows will be shown. QED237 (talk) 00:11, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
To add some info this started in Premier League and has spread to all English articles and will continue to spread all over wikipedia. WT:FOOTY and Village pump (technical) has been involved in development of these templates and the big reason is that it makes the table correct fast on club season articles not being updated that much. Without this template many league tables on club articles are out of date. QED237 (talk) 00:17, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi,

It seems that the place you are getting the results from (livescores.com.au I'm guessing?) has the goalscorers incomplete and/or wrong, while I am getting the results from the top Hebrew sports websites (ONE and sport5), I think it would be preferable if you leave the article alone and let me update it, so as to avoid edit conflicts.

League table template

Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I am considering to make a league table template such as {{2013–14 Premier League table}} for La Liga, and I know that you edit that table regularly.

The league table template are supposed to help club season articles to stay up to date, since on many club season articles the table gets updated slowly. For example on 2013–14 FC Barcelona season it was updated 16 February, on 2013–14 Athletic Bilbao season it was updated on 15 February and so on. It soon gets out of date and for the "smaller teams" it gets worse. The major setback is that it gets a bit more complicated to edit and you must update a helper template to make sure that the correct rows are shown on the club articles. This since a solution has been found at WP:Village pump (technical) to show only parts of the table (no need to show full table on club articles).

Earlier discussions can be read at

For more info you can read {{2013–14 Premier League table}} and helper {{2013–14 Premier League table/p}} and the documentation for those templates.

There are consensus to use them and they will most likely spread out. They have been on all english season articles for a few months now and I have looked at "baby errors" and feel it is ready for spain next. What do you say? Should I make the template? (I will most likely do it some day). QED237 (talk) 23:59, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Okay great I will start soon (perhaps later tonight) so it might be finished until next weekend. The problem with LaLiga will be to find a good solution for head-to-head it will require a switch that needs to be changed every time teams move around (to tell on which articles it should be shown). The easiest solution (that I will do first) is to only show head-by-head when showing full table. I am not sure it is needed when showing only parts of table, there is a rule explanation at the bottom anyway. QED237 (talk) 14:40, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

2013–14 Svenska Cupen

Hi Shaun,

Thank you for your tirelessly updating of results of the 2013–14 Svenska Cupen and many others. When you add goalscorers, please be advised that many players from lower league teams are not notable as they don't meet Wikipedia:NFOOTBALL. In Sweden, only players who has appeared in Allsvenskan are deemed to be notable and therefore should not be linked. Please consider this the next time you do result updates. Thanks again for your efforts! --Reckless182 (talk) 13:52, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I just have a question about your edit at next season Champions League. Are you sure Lincoln has qualified? 6 points and two matches left so second placed team can still win? QED237 (talk) 21:56, 11 April 2014 (UTC)

Okay no worries, I was confused now that I saw the Q in the league table on the league season article so had to look it up. It is two matches and 6 points but about 20 goals in goal difference so it is practically sure they will win but second placed team has a theoretic chance so it is to early to add Lincoln. But I must take the chance and say I am impressed in the way you keep track of all the european leagues (small and big). I had never noticed the situation and gibraltar league if you had not made that edit. Well done! QED237 (talk) 22:24, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
WHhat page do you use for that league to see the table? The link below the table in 2013–14 Gibraltar Premier Division is not updated for a while. QED237 (talk) 22:28, 11 April 2014 (UTC)

Hey!

Just wanted to say why I left the note in 2014 Meistriliiga. Of course hth is used when all matches are held, but Nõmme Kalju has one result annulled, they used a player who had been sent off in the last match of the previous season for his then club. And so if equal amount of points, first thing to look are annulled matches, then wins, then GD. Anyway keep up Your good work, really great that there are others updating 2014 ML. There should be this rule in some other leagues too, but these things are quite rare in top level, so it's not mentioned... It's noted under the Results#First-half of season. Don't know... red border would be too much clutter.

re: AS Monaco tournamentqualified to qualified.

I did it for the same reason I gave in the edit summary and as you have been told before on your talkpage about eredivisie table. You MUST update the helper template because otherwise table displays incorrectly on many pages. This is why I updated the helper and undid my own revert after that. I also added Monaco on CL article which you might have seen?

Ohh and while I am writing may I also bring up that you should not add coefficients to CL articles while that country is still playing, and for what reason did you put bilbao before porto with worse coefficient? QED237 (talk) 21:15, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

No problem, I also corrected your addition of Sevilla in Europa League since we dont know what round they will play in. Thats why we always add those teams in notes. Does that mean that the fourth placed team will join cup and we dont know round of the other teams? I am not 100% sure so thought I should ask you. This should affect the article. Club coefficients

Hi,

I have been noticing for a while that you have added teams with incorrect coefficients to 2014–15 UEFA Europa League like you did with this edit. Please remember that the teams if they have not been in europe the last 5 years do not have zero as coefficient but the coefficient corresponding to their nation. For example Ermis has 4.650 from Cyprus as kassiesa source says. Thank you. QED237 (talk) 17:05, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

No, problem I totally understand how it can happen, just wanted to inform you. Oh, by the way it seems like I just lost the power to revert since twinkle disappeared (it is checked in at "preferences" and I tried uncheck and back but it does not work. Do you use twinkle and does it work for you? Now it also seems as I lost the last row for signing talkpages fast. QED237 (talk) 19:00, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Nevermind about twinkle, it is back and working again. QED237 (talk) 19:15, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Twinkle is a simple tool many editors use for reverting other peoples edits. When looking at the latest diff you can revert in 3 different ways (revert assuming good faith, regular revert, revert vandalism). Revert vandalism opens the talkpage of the vandal and there are easy ways to warn the editor or report user automatically to WP:ARV with simple click. I like it a lot. For more info read WP:TWINKLE. By the way I just lost that and my edit row again, seems to be a problem today. QED237 (talk) 19:50, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

I don't know if you just sat through the whole game with an edit window open so you could post the result yourself, but when you saved your last change to 2014 FIFA World Cup Group B, you made some odd changes. First, Xavi and Xabi Alonso were listed as wide-ish midfielders in the official FIFA line-ups. Second, Dutch names that include tussenvoegsels like "van" or "de" should begin with a capital letter when written without a first name; hence, the goals were scored by "Van Persie" and "De Vrij", not "van Persie" and "de Vrij". Just thought you'd like to know. – PeeJay 20:58, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

I understand that, but I can't work out why you're having trouble. In my opinion, you should just try playing around with the different tools. If something fucks up, just undo and try another tool. Unsourced additions

Hello. The point is, you didn't make up the result, or the scorer, or the goal time, you got them from a source. So why not add a reference to it? Or if it wasn't a reliable source, why not wait until a reliable source became available. We're an encyclopedia based on re-publishing content already published in reliable sources, not a breaking-news service. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 21:03, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. Doesn't have to be official website, though. BBC/Sky/sportinglife.com/national newspapers/Birmingham Mail/opponents' local paper are all just as good, so long as it verifies all the content. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 21:20, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Club season articles

Are you doing all of these now? Was there a prescribed format for season articles? I'd prefer my club's season article to look like the previous seasons, but I imagine it would cause conflict. Bretonbanquet (talk) 01:04, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Leyton Orient. I've done the last few years practically single-handedly, and although I'm aware of WP:OWN, I've always made a point of the season article being very much up to date and accurate. There were aspects that I didn't do, such as transfers, but nobody ever offered to help, so I was a little surprised to see someone else take over completely. Bretonbanquet (talk) 11:24, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
It is reasonably accurate, though there are a couple of errors. The transfer section is very good. How do you feel about using the format of the previous seasons? Specifically I mean the squad list. Bretonbanquet (talk) 11:52, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
Bit over the top, no? You had a report you could have added, but chose to revert me and then add one. Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:03, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
OK< no worries. But it wasn't exactly a contentious edit; I'd said in my previous summary that the report was coming up, and (you weren't to know, I realise) I was actually trying to add it when you made your edits. Obviously the report isn't always available as soon as the result comes in, but leaving it a couple of hours is no drama, I suggest. Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:08, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
Hmm, looks like some people are being a bit heavy-handed. Yes, true - the league games for example, a report can be added straight away. Cheers for the heads-up. Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:13, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Just regarding your addition of Ben Alnwick to the transfers table – Orient offloaded him months ago, during last season. Shouldn't it be in last season's transfer table (if one existed) as "Transferred out > free agent" or something, rather than this season's? Bretonbanquet (talk) 18:32, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi, regarding your points. 1) I prefer to use both names, and there is no good reason not to. Per WP:PIPE, keep links as intuitive as possible, and don't ask readers to hover or click to find out the full link. 2) If there's an away attendance, which in my experience there usually isn't, I'll add it. Cheers, Bretonbanquet (talk) 11:45, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello. Im afraid it looks like the Wikipedia militia will be deleting a lot of our hard work on the new season pages. It appears they are not interested in content and details and we dont conform to their narrow minded views. I always thought Wikipedia to be a place where everyone can contribute. It appears that the only people who can contribute are from some inner circle, some of whom ive crossed before and had a go at their narrow mindedness. Im afraid my friend I really cannot be bothered with this anymore. They say our player stats are not with sources (I suggested Soccerway, Soccerbase, and existing Wikipedia pages), evidently that is not good enough and they will be deleting our hard work. Yet so many other football entries have no sources at all. The sources I claim are not good enough for them, yet one perpetrator I noticed uses footballsquads.com as a source, yet that is just a fan site nothing official, and therefore should be deleted. If you ever know of an alternative site where our skills, passion and enthusiasm can be used, please let me know. It appears the 'men with beards' (from the book Persephone) who run these pages lack any of these. Best wishes. Prof bed (talk)

Hi Skyblueshaun. I'm a bit confused by your edit to 2014–15 Oxford United F.C. season. Oxford beat Bristol City in the 1st round of the League Cup and lost on penalties to West Brom in the 2nd, so shouldn't the field be set to "2nd" rather than "1st"? If they'd been knocked out in the 1st round, by your reckoning wouldn't that mean we'd have to put "0th" in the infobox? Cheers. Dave.Dunford (talk) 11:01, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

MOS:ORDINAL says if we write 2nd, we write it plain, as "2nd", not with any superscripted text; additionally, if the infobox originally contained the word "second", as most of them (so far) did, you gave no reason for changing it to the abbreviation 2nd. MOS:CAPS says we don't use unnatural capital letters, so "2nd/second round", not Round. And MOS:TEXT says not to reduce text size unless it's unavoidable; it clearly isn't unavoidable here. I've left in the "knocked out by...", though "eliminated by" is both neater and shorter. Hope this explains it. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:22, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

And MOS:TEXT also says not to use bold apart from in very specific circumstances, of which an ordinary entry in an infobox wouldn't be one. Forgot that bit, cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:25, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Module sports

Hi, I see you have been updating the new created module for creating tables at 2015 UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying round. I see it has been going very well and if you have any input feel free to say whatever you want to me or to CRwikiCA or the article talkpage. We will take the module for further approvement and see comments on layout and so on after testing. The reason I talk to you now is that when you have updated I see you have missed the "update"-paramater (located almost at the top when editing) which is used for lletting readers know when table was updated and correct for example |update=17 October 2014. Perhaps in future we should even have proper timestamp there. Thank you. QED237 (talk) 20:00, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
