Copyright and notability

Wikipedia cannot hold copyright material, not even temporarily. Please read Wikipedia:Copy-paste.

Please note that assertion of permission to use text is not enough; we have to be certain that the person giving a release has the authority to do so, and that the actual copyright holder understands and agrees to Wikipedia's license terms, which allow any reader to copy, modify and re-use material for any purpose including commercial. For those reasons, a formal copyright release, as described above, is required.

It is not often worth making a copyright release, because the promotional tone of a company or personal website is likely to be unsuitable for an encyclopedia article, which requires a neutral point of view.

Article subjects need to have notability, which is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." There is more detail at WP:Notability (people), and good advice on how to write an acceptable article at WP:Your first article.

Copyright and notability - more detail, in reply to your message

Becaue of Wikipedia's mission to be a free source of knowledge, it is published under a free license, CC-BY-SA, which means that any reader is free to copy, modify and re-use material for any purpose including commercial. That means we cannot accept material on the basis of somebody's assurance that they "have full rights to use" the work: we have to be certain that the actual copyright holder understands and agrees to the license terms. Therefore, in order to release material, the procedure described in Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials has to be followed.

It is not often worth doing that, because material written for other purposes is often unsuitable for an encyclopedia article. The material you posted read like an obituary notice, but an encyclopedia reader will be less interested in the details of his life-story, and more in what he achieved that makes him of interest.

In any case, more will be needed in the way of external references, for two reasons:

• to verify what the article says, because of the Wikipedia:Verifiability policy that: "any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source"
• to establish WP:Notability, Wikipedia's inclusion criterion, which is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The test is, have people not connected with the subject thought it significant enough to write substantial comment about?

There is useful advice in WP:Your first article.

I note that you would like to contribute more images: they will be very welcome, but I am afraid image copyright is a difficult area, not because we are obstructive but because of the complexities of copyright law. For instance, copyright in a photograph belongs to the photographer, unless he has assigned it, e.g. to a publisher, and possession of a physical photograph does not give the right to reproduce it. I will give your some more advice about this tomorrow: for a start, see Help:Introduction to uploading images.

Images

Image copyright is fiendishly complicated, not because we are obstructive but because copyright law is fiendishly complicated. The best way to contribute images is to upload them to Wikimedia Commons, a separate organization which holds images that are available to all the Wikimedia projects, such as the numerous Wikipedias in other languages. The Commons upload wizard is at commons:Special:UploadWizard and has a link to a help page.

Commons are absolutely insistent that an image must be free for users to copy and use without restriction. Their page about licensing is at commons:Commons:Licensing. Basically that means they have to be satisfied as to who the copyright owner is, and that he has given the necessary rights. For instance, you said of the image "even though I am the copyright holder", but did you take the photograph? If not, who did, and what is the evidence that he transferred the copyright to you? Unfortunately, the commonly given reply: "Nobody knows who took the photo, he's probably dead, he won't object" is not good enough.

The English Wikipedia is prepared to use some non-free images, which have to be uploaded to it directly. That's explained at Help:Introduction to uploading images. A non-free image has to satisfy all ten of the conditions at WP:NFCC. Photos of living people, for instance, fail WP:NFCC#1, because it would be possible for someone to take and donate a free image. That looks an alarming list, and it is quite strictly policed, but in fact non-free images are often used. JohnCD (talk) 22:17, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

Your other point

...about having to write it twice: it's up to you what you write for your own site, but writing for Wikipedia you have to comply with our requirements, particularly verifiability and notability. I would recommend, again, reading WP:Your first article and then starting by reviewing the published sources about Fechenbach and working from them. A very experienced Wikipedia adinistrator wrote this advice in User:Uncle G/On notability#Writing about subjects close to you:

"When writing about subjects that are close to you, don't use your own personal knowledge of the subject, and don't cite yourself, your web site, or the subject's web site. Instead, use what is written about the subject by other people, independently, as your sources. Cite those sources in your very first edit. If you don't have such sources, don't write."

Hermann fechenbach moved to draftspace
