Hey

[edit]

Confirm that this image was taken in HK?

I mean, yes, "guess where", but due diligence. DS (talk) 15:45, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As for whether it's still there: no idea, I've never been within 10,000km of the place. I ask because the location of the artwork is relevant for purposes of determining the copyright on a photo of a two-dimensional artwork which is permanently(?) displayed in a public place, and which is of a copyrighted character created in the 1970s. DS (talk) 02:10, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(Well, Google Street View shows it was still there as of December 2020...) DS (talk) 02:21, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Letting you know

[edit]

this came up recently regarding the "General Formatting" script. Are there any specifics that would be informative that you know of? (such as a particular MOS section). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks — Ched (talk) 14:29, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I just moved some content that I've been working on in my own user space over to your user space. The content is a bunch of suggestions for changes and it is organized by type of change. The idea is to help standardize change requests as the encyclopedia evolves over time and to reduce your workload in the process. I was also thinking about how to regulate the page as well. Maybe using pending changes or a list of approved users could be useful to help eliminate unwanted content. I really don't quite know how it would work best, and if the new page isn't suitable to you, please handle at your discretion. Cheers! Dawnseeker2000 02:49, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks. I've put through the vast majority of the suggestions. I'll be watching out for glitches (especially where the disambiguated names are wikilinked). At present, I know it's only me and admins who can make changes to the database. I'm open to the idea of approved users, and will find out how that could work. This will certainly be useful if/when I drop off Wikiverse . -- Ohc revolution of our times 09:37, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. Lately, an editor has begun recreating these articles. Because these estates appear on the HK census, they have been getting approved as per WP:GEOLAND, but I came upon this one this morning, and saw the AfD discussion from back in 2009, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Shek Yam East Estate. As an active participant in that discussion, I thought I'd ask your opinion on these now.Onel5969 TT me 12:51, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your script and disambiguation pages

[edit]

Hello, I don't know if this is worth coding an exception for because it was caused by a very unusual IP user, , but I don't think your script should add dmy/mdy templates to disambiguation pages like it did in this edit to It's a Man's World. I for one can't think of any cases where full dates would be present on disambiguation pages; usually only years are mentioned and such pages don't contain references. If the offending user ever reappears and continues to make no effort at communicating with other editors, I'd be happy to block them on sight at this point. Graham87 16:52, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for 32nd anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests

[edit]

On 17 August 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 32nd anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that on the 32nd anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, the traditional venue for memorials in Hong Kong lay empty (blockade pictured) for the first time in thirty-two years? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/32nd anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 32nd anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Just wondering if there are any plans on fixing the Scripts sections showing up multiple times in user sidebar as discussed here. Cheers, - FlightTime (open channel) 16:14, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

EasyWikiDev

[edit]

Hi! I'm User:Ed6767. I'm probably best known for founding and developing Wikipedia:RedWarn, which is now one of the most used user scripts on the English Wikipedia. I couldn't help but notice that you also develop user scripts, so I was wondering if I could ask you to try and give me feedback on my new tool called EasyWikiDev. It's a new way to develop user scripts quickly and easily using Visual Studio Code, and only takes a few minutes to set up and install on your computer, whilst saving you the headache of constantly having to save edits and reload the page for every single change to your script you'd like to test. EasyWikiDev makes it so you can develop your script locally, on your own computer, and only publish the changes to your users when you are ready to - and unlike other solutions, EasyWikiDev reloads the page right away when you make a change, so you always see the latest version of your script. Plus, by using Visual Studio Code, you have access to some of the most extensive and helpful extensions and tools available to developers right now.

If you're interested, you can find the GitHub repository here and a video tutorial that shows both how to set up EasyWikiDev and how to use it (which you should watch) here. When you have tried it and would like to give feedback, or just need help, please let me know by pinging me - you'd play a big part in my goal to make user script development easier for all Wikipedians. Thanks again for your consideration, ✨ Ed talk!12:40, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Script attempting to change minus signs (−) to en dashes

[edit]

... like at the Edmonton article, where it tried to use en dashes in the time-zone offset fieleds. I didn't let it do so, naturally. Graham87 15:21, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

When one uses this gadget, proper use of "website" or "work" should not be replaced with "publisher". Rediff.com and NDTV are two victims who should be under website but usage of this script converts them to publishers. Kailash29792 (talk) 04:47, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

When considering these issues I've found that looking at our articles can give some information about whether they might be italicized or not. Looking at these two I see that neither is italicized. I'm not saying either way is correct, but one approach might be to start with getting acceptance with the italics part for the article title (adding {{italic title}}). title=Archived copy

[edit]

Hi Ohconfucius

Hope you are keeping well.

When cleaning up the refs on Foreign relations of Oman, I noticed this edit[1] by you, which replaced
|title=Archived copy
with
|title=<!--ACTUAL ARTICLE TITLE BELONGS HERE! original text: Archived copy-->

I am sure that was well-intended, but its effect is unhelpful, because it impedes tool-assisted cleanup.

"Archived copy" is a standard placeholder title added by InternetArchiveBot when it archives a WP:Bare URL. That title is tracked in Category:CS1 maint: archived copy as title, which allows tool and editors to identify the precise issue, and fix it.

Your edit had two undesirable effects:

  1. it removed the article from the specific Category:CS1 maint: archived copy as title, and placed it in the generic Category:CS1 errors: missing title. That impedes cleanup tools, because the tools lose the crucial info that the ref should be filled from the archived copy
  2. Some tools skip any ref field which has a comment, or even skip the whole ref if it contains a comment.

So a ref which might be fixable with tools was turned into one which can only be fixed manually.

This appears to be probably a function of your script User:Ohconfucius/script/Sources, but unfortunately the edit summary doesn't identify which script was used. (It would be great if that could be fixed).

I did a search for insource:/\<!-- *ACTUAL ARTICLE TITLE BELONGS HERE/i, which found 260 hits.

Some of them are of the form |title=<!--ACTUAL ARTICLE TITLE BELONGS HERE! original text: Archived copy-->, but others relate to URLs or domain names in in the |title= parameter. Again, I think that those are unhelpful, because commenting out impedes identifying the errors, and the comments prevent tools from fixing the issue.

Also the HTML comments are malformed: the comment markers should be separated from the comment by spaces, as in <!-- GoodComment --> not <!--BadComment-->

Please can you remove this functionality from the script? I am sure that it seemed like a good idea, but it doesn't fix any of the problems; it just makes them harder to detect and harder to fix.

I propose to use WP:AWB to remove these comments, and restore the |title= field to its previous states, but I will hold off doing that for now. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:30, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the heads up. I have been correcting cs1 errors, and as it just seemed like a common error from bot insertions of citations, I wrote in a regex to fix it without having any idea that such things were tracked for replacement. The regex resided in the test version of the SOURCES script – you shouldn't have gone to the trouble to track it down. I knew exactly where it was located, and have now disabled it. -- Ohc revolution of our times 15:14, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the fix! That's great.
And sorry for my slow reply. Without a ping in your response, I didn't get back here until I did my weekly check of prev discussions. Pings really help!
Since you didn't comment on my proposal to use WP:AWB remove these comments, and restore the |title= field to its previous state, I will assume that silence=consent, and do it now. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:59, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl:Sure, no objections from these quarters. And thanks for offering to clean up after me, How many of them articles are there out there, BTW? I could reverse my regex if there are a large number. -- Ohc revolution of our times 20:38, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question re: a script you use

[edit]

Hello! Thank you for correcting the temperature conversion on Pagosa hot springs‎. I noticed the summary was Script-assisted style fixes and per CS1 and I am wondering if this script is available to others, and if so what is it called? I'd like to use it on some other hot springs articles I've created. Best regards, Netherzone (talk) 18:13, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dates script

[edit]

Hello, just spotted a problem with this edit by the date script. It removes a {{date}} template but does not convert the date that is the parameter to that template. Keith D (talk) 20:55, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks @Keith D:, I've never come across it before. It's not a format recognised by the template, and I'm glad it's not common. I'll adjust the script accordingly. -- Ohc revolution of our times 14:26, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks of response, I thought that a BOT had gone through removing {{date}} templates, but have not seen recent evidence of this activity. Keith D (talk) 17:16, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote a script for awb to do just that in cs1|2 templates. Got most of the way done but started getting complaints about cosmetic edits so I abandoned that script. Mayhaps that is what you remember. It appears that there are only a few hundred articles that use {{date}} in cs1|2 template parameters:
My script checked all cs1|2 date holding parameters, but these are the 'biggies'.
    Trappist the monk (talk) 17:35, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
My MOSNUM script removes {{date}} templates as a part of its routine work. I added correction of cs1 errors to my script a while back, and have just got around to pruning them errors in earnest of late, I have probably zapped two thousand articles off that cs1-dates error list in the last week or two. Most are where endashes are expected instead of hyphens (per MOSNUM). It's a bit mind-numbing, but I combine the work with unlinking, formatting and other MOSNUM fixes. I'll get around to removing those templates in due course. -- Ohc revolution of our times 18:15, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Notable now?

[edit]

Re 2009 merge. I stumbled upon few pages discussing his role as a father here. Do you feel like restoring, adding this to the list, or doing nothing? :) Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:32, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Piotrus:After 12 years without anyone taking action, I'd be inclined to leave it as a redirect (unless of course you or anyone else) believe the referenced content can help the subject fulfil the criteria for notability. But because I'm not able to read the part of the book you cite, you may be better placed to judge that than I am. Feel free to undo the merge as you see fit. -- Ohc revolution of our times 20:35, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Brian Kan

[edit]

I have been to Citobun's talk page intended to talk with him about this edit but ended up running into your message regarding West Kowloon station. Is that guy just another vandalist? I can't find anything wrong to include the period which Kan served as a RegCo cllr. For your information I have pinged Deryck on his talk page too just now since he's the only Hong Kong sysop who I managed to locate. 124.217.188.240 (talk) 06:34, 4 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

For your further information he/she has also reverted my edits to Oasis Hong Kong and NCA. 124.217.188.240 (talk) 06:37, 4 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
