User:Curly Turkey/Quebec comics → Quebec comics –
- The current Quebec comics page is almost entirely unreferenced, and very thin in details (and thick in lists of redlinks). I've rewritten the article from scratch in my sandbox. While it could certainly use more work , I think it is more than at a level of quality sufficient to replace the existing article. CüRlyTüRkeyTalkContribs 07:56, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- Object that would delete the history of the page. Why don't you just edit the article normally (press edit and overwrite all the content with your new content) ? 76.65.128.132 (talk) 09:46, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- I suppose you could ask for a histmerge as well... 76.65.128.132 (talk) 09:47, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- When I had Canadian comics moved, the history was saved to a subpage. I'm not an administrator, so I don't know how it's done, but the original history was, indeed, saved. CüRlyTüRkeyTalkContribs 11:16, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- I don't see why that was done, it seems to be against standing Wikipedia practice (to keep the old versions of articles in the history) 76.65.128.132 (talk) 12:55, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- Why would that be? Anthony Appleyard moved it to Canadian comics/version 1. Is there some reason not to do this? It ends up saving the entire history, as well as retaining the history the page had in my sandbox. What's the drawback? And what would be the alternative? Whatever it is, I just want to get the content onto the page in the most frictionless way possible. CüRlyTüRkeyTalkContribs 13:04, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- That seems highly unusual. I don't understand why Anthony would have done that. Now the original edit history is buried in an obscure subpage. That doesn't seem right. older ≠ wiser
- So what would have been the right thing to do? I can't find a policy page that makes this clear. CüRlyTüRkeyTalkContribs 13:40, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- Why not simply edit the existing article? older ≠ wiser 14:01, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- Because a) I rewrote the article from scratch (because I found the article as-is unsalvageable) and b) I had been under the impression that when one does (a) in one's userspace, one has to preserve the edit history. Apparently that's not the case? CüRlyTüRkeyTalkContribs 14:31, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- In most cases the edit history needs to be kept to preserve attribution. Here, however, the only person who's edited your draft version is you, and there's no problem to just edit the article since the changes will be attributed to you anyway when you edit the page. - There was a discussion on this at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves#Displacing edit histories. Yesterday I went ahead and just replaced the contents of Quebec comics, so this is no longer an issue.
- However, I would like to see the proper procedure properly spelled out somewhere. Eve after all this discussion, I still can't find the guideline that makes it clear. CüRlyTüRkeyTalkContribs 22:57, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- When I reject a histmerge request, the reason is usually WP:Parallel histories. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 23:43, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- Someone wanted me to move something to Canadian comics, so I moved the existing contents of Canadian comics to Canadian comics/version 1, rather than merely deleting it, as it is not safe for a page to sit over a deleted parallel history: see WP:Parallel histories. - Comment this can be closed since Curly Turkey integrated his edits into the existing article, so no moves are necessary. 76.65.128.132 (talk) 05:44, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
