Peter Olwyler (1921-1999) had a long and varied life as a journalist, photographer, writer and musician, though he was little know outside his adopted home town of San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico.

His career as a fine art photographer began with his father’s gift of a box Brownie camera when he was 12 years old and led him to be public relations manager of the fine arts school, Instituto Allende, in the historic hill-town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in 1955.

Peter’s photographs illustrate a significant turning point for the people of the Bajio region of central Mexico during the 1950s and 1960s, just as they began to experience the massive modernization of their country. He captured a unique view of the Mexican culture at that turning point. He also captured striking portraits of unique individuals that peopled the narrow cobblestone streets of the historic city.
