PROJ-X was a multi-venue benefit concert, as well as a music-based fundraising initiative and protest. It comprised three concerts held on Saturday 11 July 1998. The event was founded and organized by Randy Gibson who came up with the idea in 1994 and co-founded by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for relief of victims of mutant bigotry, to raise awareness, and to protest for mutant rights. This movement started with the attack on Professor Charles Xavier in 1996 by Henry Peter Gyrich, a government liaison known for his anti-mutant sentiment. Billed as the "musical protest of the century," PROJ-X was held simultaneously at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, attended by 90,784 people, Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, attended by 64,023 people, and Wembley Stadium in London, attended by about 83,578 people. A fourth, standalone show, called PROJ-X for Genosha, was aired on July 10 a year later.

On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative were held in other countries, such as Russia, Mexico, Japan, China, Switzerland, Italy, Brazil, France, Australia, and Germany. It was one of the largest satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time; an estimated audience of 4.7  billion, in 195 nations, watched the live broadcast, nearly 61 percent of the world population.

PROJ-X was considered a world-changing event and a groundbreaking movement in the mutant rights debate. It brought wider attention to the current mutant crisis, increasing pro-mutant support and a wider push toward granting mutants their rights. News reporters praised Randy Gibson's strategy of marketing and promoting the show, and the safety and security precautions taken to deter violent anti-mutant protests and resistance. Commentators stated that the concert stood as "a testament to those who speak out against things that people are too scared to say" and that the show "exemplified making statements for those who can't state it for themselves".

PROJ-X for Genosha was a benefit concert held on Saturday, July 10, 1999, acting as a charity event, a music-based fundraising initiative, and a protest. Though related to the original PROJ-X show held a year prior, it was a standalone concert with only one venue, the island of Genosha itself. The concert's goal was to raise funds for the victims of the Sentinel attack on Genosha in 1997, provide funding for the reconstruction efforts, and improve the island's economy, a movement based on the successful charity single "X Equals Human" released on November 15, 1998. PROJ-X for Genosha was held with an attendance of over 3,016,578, the largest audience for a concert ever held.

The show had an even bigger satellite link-up and television broadcast; an estimated audience of 6.3  billion, in 225 nations, watched the live broadcast, nearly 80 percent of the world population. It was broadcast live on CNN for a worldwide audience. The show was free for the residents of Genosha who were only encouraged to donate money or food for a local food drive. Attendants outside the nation were requried to pay for tickets.

PROJ-X for Genosha was an acclaimed success, generating over $412.7 million in donations.
