Stupid Mario Brothers is a live action Internet comedy series based on Nintendo's best selling Mario franchise, created by Richard Michael Alvarez.

Plot

[edit]

Fed up with their hectic lives in the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario and Luigi have returned to the Real World for a seemingly permanent vacation. However, they end up frequently contending with both old and new friends and enemies, as well as their own wacky antics.

The series implies somewhat that some of the numerous video game franchises (Mario Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, EarthBound, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Metal Gear) share the same continuity, as several non-Mario characters make regular appearances or are mentioned, and the Mario Bros. often greet them as friends (though this could be a reference to the Super Smash Bros. series). Events from assorted games are mentioned often, including (but not limited to) Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. A recurring theme throughout the seasons is Johnny Mushroom and the Kingdoms, an amateur rock band founded by Mario and Luigi that frequently plays Mario or video game parodies of pre-existing songs.

Season one

[edit]

The first season largely focuses on slapstick comedy; the episodes are mostly filler and, with a few exceptions, have no real connection to one another. Every episode would typically begin with one or more characters (usually Mario and Luigi) going up to a large mailbox and receiving a letter, the contents of which would often begin an episode's plot.

The main antagonists of the season are Wario and Waluigi, who have been sent by Bowser to capture Mario and Luigi and bring them back to the Mushroom Kingdom. Other characters introduced throughout the season include Donkey Kong, Ash Ketchum, and Princess Peach. After a climactic battle between the Mario and Wario Brothers in the season finale, the Marios receive a letter from Link, warning them of an impending danger, and giving them the message, "In the Darkness Lies the Truth."

Season two

[edit]

The second season is much more focused on plot and action. The central antagonist of the season is Nox Decious, an extremely powerful sorcerer from Arthurian times (revealed to be the evil brother of Merlin, who is later revealed to be Mario and Luigi's ancestor) who has been resurrected by Bowser and Ganondorf to help them take over the world; however, Decious later reveals to Mario that he had manipulated Bowser and Ganondorf, and they work for him, and he plans to destroy humanity and everything else that Merlin stood for. More characters are introduced this season, including Ness, Brock, and Link. After Mario and his assembled gang (including Luigi, Link, Ness, Peach, DK, Brock, and Ash) suffer a crushing defeat at Decious' hands, they learn that the only weapon capable of harming Decious is the Nether Saber, a powerful Beam Sword.

In a subplot, Wario and Waluigi are fired by Bowser due to their repeated failures, and from then on plot to simply cause trouble for the Mario Bros., whom Wario blames for his ruin. After repeated failures, Wario's life falls apart, and he breaks off his friendship with Waluigi and plots to kill Mario, while Waluigi leaves town.

Meanwhile, Mario's group manages to acquire the three "Nether Emblems" needed to form the Nether Saber (a hilt, a shield, and a cross), and Mario goes to confront Nox Decious. Unfortunately, Decious relieves Mario of the Emblems before he can assemble the Saber, and after a long and grueling battle, Decious begins to psychokinetically strangle Mario. Before he can kill Mario, however, Wario arrives on the scene, assembles the Nether Saber, and kills Decious with it, wanting to kill Mario himself, ending the second season on a cliffhanger.

Season three

[edit]

Before Wario can kill Mario with the Nether Saber, it automatically deactivates. Wario, acquiring a magical artifact simply known as the Truth Stone, departs on a quest to reactivate the Saber with the help of a mysterious disembodied voice and a man named "Nilrem", while Mario's group plans to stop him before he can. Arriving in town are Solid Snake, Gary Oak, and Otacon, who quickly side with Mario; Waluigi subsequently returns to town and sides with Mario against his old friend. In a scene reminiscent of the climax of Metal Gear Solid, Wario, disguised as Snake's old mentor McDonell Miller, tricks Snake, Otacon, and Ash into reactivating the Nether Saber, which he promptly steals. Mario meets up with Nilrem, who turns out to be Merlin. Merlin reveals that Mario is a "chosen one", and Wario is as well, though Wario is currently dealing with internal conflict. He also warns Mario of a demonic servant of Nox Decious known only as "the Darkness", and only Mario and Wario can stop him. After discovering this, Mario, Luigi, and Waluigi fight Wario and manage to bring him to his senses. Discovering his purpose, Wario reconciles with Waluigi, and becomes friends with the Marios. Merlin tells Mario not to search for the Darkness, as it will find him in due time. The season ends with the Darkness (revealed to be a dark doppelgänger of Mario, or "Shadow Mario") consulting with the ghost of Nox Decious.

In a subplot, Link ends up lost in the woods and meets a talking coconut (simply called "Coconut"), whom instructs him to find a mystical artifact simply called the "Artifact", which turns out to be a Fire Flower planted in the Real World by Merlin.

Movie

[edit]

Picking up from where the third season left off, the movie has been split into two acts. The first act is built much like the first season, with little plot development and a heavy emphasis on slapstick, with the introduction of Professor Oak, Princess Daisy, Bowser, Kamek and Yoshi.

The second act is built like the second and third seasons. In the second act, the Darkness attacks Link and murders him after a grueling battle. Mario, blaming himself for not going after the Darkness sooner, launches an all-out search for the Darkness, personally sending Snake in search of him and sending a letter to Ness, who quickly returns to town. Meanwhile, Nox Decious begins to appear to a sleeping Luigi in a bizarre dream world, attempting to persuade Luigi to join him.

Before long, Nox Decious possesses Luigi, transforming him into Mr. L, and Mario is killed by the Darkness, who is killed by Wario in turn. However, Mario meets Link in the afterlife, and receives the Artifact, which he uses to power himself up and come back to Earth, successfully defeating Mr. L and freeing Luigi from Decious' influence. Link is subsequently resurrected by Merlin, and Coconut is turned into his original form, a Gerudo king named Sage. However, it is revealed that only a specific counter-curse can destroy the Darkness in an absolute sense, and thus he returns to life, swearing revenge on Wario.

Proceeding this, Wario gets the counter-curse from Waluigi, and manages to permanently kill the Darkness. After all of their adventures, Mario, Luigi, and Wario decide to wait a little longer before going back to the Mushroom Kingdom, wanting to see the world.

Season 4 Rich Alvarez and Chris Muller originally planned to use the movie as the series finale, as many crucial cast members had moved or were moving away. However, they have actually used a few different acors and some of them returned. Season four has actually started. Some of the new characters are Ken,Ryu,Max Payne (only in a few episodes),and Tommy Vercetti (only in a few episodes).

Characters

[edit]
  • Mario: The central protagonist. SMB depicts Mario as somewhat of a lazy, selfish bum, as he frequently refuses to return to the Mushroom Kingdom in favor of relaxing and having fun. Nonetheless, Mario is a true hero and often steps in to help whenever he is needed.
  • Luigi: The deuteragonist and Mario's younger brother. He is shown to be somewhat less lazy than Mario, though just as fun-loving.
  • Princess Peach: Mario's ex-girlfriend and the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, represented here as a whiny and immature nag. For most of the first season, she is being held prisoner by Bowser (again), but escapes by shipping herself to the Real World in a UPS package. She assists in the fight against Nox Decious in the second season, and reappears in the first act of the movie, where Mario's attempts to teach her how to drive results in both of them and Luigi getting arrested and leads to a bitter break-up. Her debut episode gives her full name as Princess Peach Winifred Toadstool XIV.
  • Wario: Mario's rival and a former henchman of Bowser. In the first season, he works for Bowser, under orders to capture Mario and Luigi and return them to the Mushroom Kingdom by any means necessary, though this doesn't stop him from joining Johnny Mushroom and the Kingdoms with Mario and Luigi. Midway through the second season, Wario is fired by Bowser after repeated failures, and subsequently plots to ruin Mario's reputation with little results. Finally, Wario breaks off his friendship with Waluigi and plots to kill Mario while being used by the Darkness. However, in the third season finale, Wario discovers his purpose and joins Mario's group.
  • Waluigi: Wario's best friend and partner, sent by Bowser to the Real World to help Wario after Bowser decides that Wario is too incompetent to capture the Mario Bros. alone. However, after being fired by Bowser and repeatedly humiliated by the Marios, Wario breaks off his friendship with Waluigi, who subsequently leaves town. Waluigi returns in the third season finale to help Mario and Luigi defeat Wario, having been named Wario's bodyguard by Merlin. After Wario realizes who he is, he reconciles with Waluigi.
  • Donkey Kong: A disgruntled, short-tempered, necktie-wearing gorilla and a friend/rival to Mario. Sometime before the series began, DK stayed with the Mario Bros. for a while, during which he repeatedly shed all over the bathroom and urinated in the sink. He is extremely protective of his bananas, and will relentlessly chase and attack anyone who steals them, which has become a running gag. DK becomes friends with Brock during the series, and helps the Marios in times of crisis, such as the fight against Nox Decious. DK is written out of the series during the third season, having been explained in the movie as having returned to the jungle.
  • Link: The Hero of Time, protector of Hyrule, and a longtime friend of Mario and Luigi. Though a powerful and effective fighter, Link has shown trouble understanding the concepts of the real world. At the beginning of the second season, he is captured and imprisoned by Nox Decious, but manages to escape and join forces with Mario and Luigi to defeat the wizard. Later, he finds the Artifact, a Fire Flower grown in the Real World by Merlin, only to be killed by the Darkness during the second act of the movie. He is resurrected near the end of the movie, but departs to continue protecting Hyrule.
