Bus WikiProject

[edit]

I'm considering creating a bus WikiProject, to help manage articles about buses, bus routes, and related infrastructure. Specifically, we would work out exactly what to include in an article and how to ensure that information is not deleted. Would you be interested?

I'm also hoping the library will get "Baltimore's Streetcar Routes" for me through interlibrary loan, which will allow me to add more history to the ex-streetcar routes. --NE2 17:12, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

OK... I've started WikiProject buses. I think the first discussion we should have is what routes are "important" enough for their own article. --NE2 18:59, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit]

Ah! I want to thank you for this diff here. The phrasing bothered me, but I didn't have time to figure out how to make it sound better. That's an excellent word choice; again, thank you. DS 21:21, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Responded on my talk page where you posted. DMacks 20:42, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Sebwite,

Would you be interested in trying to make your (proposed) WikiProject becoming a succes by actively involving yourself in a recruitment agency aimed at establishing an active base of participants for a WikiProject?--Daanschr 11:21, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

The articles I have been writing about roads are already a part of an existing Wikiproject - the one on Roads in Maryland. Sebwite 18:56, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
I have asked a few people on the WikiProject proposals article. You wanted to start a WikiProject about Beanie Babies. So, i asked you. Now, i have found some participants for the recruiting project and we have to discuss on what our goals are and how we will run things.--Daanschr 08:55, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
I noticed that someone suggested a WikiProject on Beanie Babies. I like the idea, since I have many myself, and I can help out. Sebwite 14:20, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Towson Bypass-Burke Avenue-Putty Hill Road-Rossville Boulevard

[edit]

This transportation section on Towson seems excessive. It takes up more than half the page. I don't understand why we need a whole paragraphs dedicated to streets and their traffic patterns.

As I'm sure you are aware, this page has been deleted after the deletion discussion. However, if you desire to continue to merge the information into another article, I would be glad to recreate the article and move it to your userspace. Let me know. CitiCat 02:49, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Actually, what I have thought of doing is writing a description of each of these individual roads in the respective town in which the majority of the road is located. If you can transfer the article to here, it can take it from that point on. Sebwite 14:42, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
The page is now at User:Sebwite/Towson. Cheers, CitiCat 20:23, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Thank you. Sebwite 20:34, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Real life help needed

[edit]

Can you please tell me how to reach Towson using Public transit from 5501 O'Donnell Street cutoff? I am absolutely new to the area. Thanks a lot. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 22:20, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

I don't think Wikipedia is the place to inquire about these things. However, I will give you the directions anyway.

First, take the #20 bus (map) from the Baltimore Travel Plaza or near Ponca and O'Donnell to somewhere on Fayette Street downtown (either near St. Paul or Calvert is best). Then, walk over one block south to Baltimore Street, and catch the #8 bus map marked "Lutherville" to Towson. Sebwite 17:05, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

A WikiProject for you

[edit]

The U.S. Roads project (parent of the MD roads project) is spinning off streets into a specialized Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Streets. I remembered your articles on Baltimore streets and thought I'd drop you a note here so you could participate if you wanted to. Thanks! —Scott5114 03:46, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

I may be interested. I will have to look into it. Sebwite 15:22, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

The problem with this is that there are too many routes for a reasonably-sized box. Similar boxes have been deleted in other states, with the reasoning that the link to the list and browsing in the infobox is enough. --NE2 17:18, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Currently, I am in the middle of constructing this template, which I have modeled after a similar one in Pennsylvania. I am welcoming of input and suggestions from others on how to best construct this, but I do feel it is very useful. Sebwite (talk) 23:04, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I don't believe there is a template in Pennsylvania that lists all the state routes; which one are you modeling it on? --NE2 23:05, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
This one. It covers specifically the Harrisburg area. But Maryland is a smaller state, so I believe for now, one template can cover the entire state. I also left out the other modes of transportation because other templates covering them do exist. Sebwite (talk) 23:09, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
That's a little on the large side, and adding all the routes on List of Maryland state highways is not a good idea. --NE2 23:14, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
If it gets to be very long, it then may be worth looking into breaking it up into different regions of Maryland. For now, it is still incomplete.Sebwite (talk) 23:18, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I can tell you right now that it will be too large, and similar templates have been deleted for several other states. --NE2 23:19, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Does it sound good to make separate ones for the regions of Baltimore area, Washington DC area, Western Maryland, Southern Maryland, and Eastern Shore?Sebwite (talk) 23:22, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I think one for the Baltimore area, and maybe one for the DC area ("Maryland suburbs"?), would be useful, but I can't see the point in the others. --NE2 23:23, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

I have nominated List of Main Streets, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Main Streets. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Speedy deletion of Template:Google articles

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Template:Google articles requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Thanks. --MZMcBride (talk) 05:49, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

I've undone you move of marble. The move was not discussed, and I saw no effort on your part to fix all the link to pages that ended up going to a disambiguation page. Templates

[edit]

I have no real objection to removing them, but tell me again why they are not necessary?Marylandstater (talk) 20:21, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

The template {{Baltimore neighborhoods}}, which I created some time back, covers a list of neighborhoods in the city of Baltimore, and links all these pages to each other in an organized fashion. It is this template which fulfills that purpose for the neighborhoods. The {{Baltimore}} template is a very useful one - I have nothing against it. But it is different from the neighborhoods template and therefore should not be in any of the neighborhood articles. In general, it is best to avoid putting two templates on one page because they will not show up open. This is especially so when the second template does not list the respective article.Sebwite (talk) 23:04, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Chesapeake College is Public

[edit]

I'm not sure why you moved Chesapeake College from Public to Private while working on the Maryland College and University template. See Presidential Welcome as a reference. Thank youNaraht (talk) 04:51, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

I created this template several months ago using an existing list on a Wikipedia page, and I followed the categories on that list. I have not made any changes ever since, though someone else may have. Perhaps the information there was not provided accurately. I am not familiar with Chesapeake College. If you believe it is incorrect, you can change it.Sebwite (talk) 05:06, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Request to move article Coldspring Lane Light Rail Stop incomplete

[edit]

You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page Coldspring Lane Light Rail Stop to a different title - however your proposal is either incomplete or has been contested as being controversial. As a result, it has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete after five days will be removed.

Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:

  1. Added {{move|NewName}} at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
  2. Added {{subst:RMtalk|NewName|reason for move}} to the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved, to automatically create a discussion section there.
  3. Added {{subst:RMlink|PageName|NewName|reason for move}} to the top of today's section here.

If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. - JPG-GR (talk) 19:37, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey, I know you are a frequent editor to article in the Baltimore area, I was wondering if I could get your opinion on the changes User:AirmanJeff has made to this page. I am ready to revert the page back to your edit due to the number of changes he has made, specifically attack former Mayor Schmoke and other business leaders. Just wanted your $.02 before to make sure I wasn't missing something here. Wildthing61476 (talk) 15:01, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

I was not familiar with this story when it occurred, though I have looked it over, and given that there are references, the only phrase I see a problem with is "The Mayor should not be held solely at fault however." This is mostly a writing style issue. I don't see a problem with writing about the issue. There is a small section of it that should be rewritten at a neutral point of view.

To be honest, I voted for Schmoke in 2 out of the 3 times he ran, and was not happy with his performance, but my judgment here is based purely on Wikipedia guidelines. I do not view this as an attack, but rather a sourced set of statements that needs neutrality improvement.Sebwite (talk) 16:10, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Sounds good to me then, although the page really needs to be centered POV-wise better. Wildthing61476 (talk) 16:42, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Roads in Prince Georges County, Maryland, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Roads in Prince Georges County, Maryland has been superseded by a similar category (typos in name, expanding abbreviations, fixing capitalisation, renaming to comply with the "by country" format and conversions from singular to plural or vice versa). (CSD C2).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Roads in Prince Georges County, Maryland, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. To see the user who deleted the page, click here CSDWarnBot (talk) 00:30, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Street View

[edit]

As you have stated on Talk:Google Street View, you were using the real article for test edits. I have moved you version to User:Sebwite/Google/Street View so you may experiment there. Please finish your proposal there before placing it on the article. ;-) I hope this helps. --FlagFreak TALK 12:58, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Google Street View coverage areas requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia, because it appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion. If you can indicate how it is different from the previously posted material, place the template {{hangon}} underneath the other template on the article and put a note on the page's discussion page saying why this article should stay. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. If you believe the original discussion was unjustified, please use deletion review instead of continuing to recreate the page. Thank you. --FlagFreak TALK 01:27, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

When adding links to material on an external site, as you did to Charles Stuart (murderer), please ensure that the external site is not violating the creator's copyright. Linking to websites that display copyrighted works is acceptable as long as the website's operator has created or licensed the work. Knowingly directing others to a site that violates copyright may be considered contributory infringement. This is particularly relevant when linking to sites such as YouTube, where due care should be taken to avoid linking to material that violates its creator's copyright. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If you believe the linked site is not violating copyright with respect to the material, then you should do one of the following:

  • If the linked site is the copyright holder, leave a message explaining the details on the article Talk page;
  • If a note on the linked site credibly claims permission to host the material, or a note on the copyright holder's site grants such permission, leave a note on the article Talk page with a link to where we can find that note;
  • If you are the copyright holder or the external site administrator, adjust the linked site to indicate permission as above and leave a note on the article Talk page;

If the material is available on a different site that satisfies one of the above conditions, link to that site instead. You have yet to show me these are 'legal' I see no evidence on You Tube to suggest the producers of the show are the uploader, that links.. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:13, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

I read an article one time (I think in the Washington Post) about Rescue 911 being on YouTube that promoted its presence. Though I don't remember exactly when the article was published, the article seemed to indicate that this was authorized. Most of these videos have been there for more than two years - had they been a copyright violation, they would have been removed a lot sooner. Sebwite (talk) 21:41, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi, I just reverted you and hence removed all the links. I think we would need a source for them not being under copyright anymore before posting the links. I can't imagine that the copyright not being enforced is enough. I'll try to search and see if I find anything.. --aktsu (t / c) 22:27, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Just wondering what measures you've taken to get attention to the proposal? I don't really know how one usually goes about it, but do you think Wikipedia:Village pump (policy) would be a good place to mention it to get feedback and get the ball rolling? Great initiative BTW :) --aktsu (t / c) 19:38, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

I have made quiet a few proposals myself, and I have come across exactly the same question when this happens. In this case, as you know, I contacted those who previously contacted me regarding the issue that sparked the proposal, which included you.
I have been planning for some time to write an essay on Getting attention for new pages, and in fact, I think I will start it now. Sebwite (talk) 23:24, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit]

I'll go try and fix it, but don't edit without discussion. And remember ... nothing, nothing at all, is inherently notable.
Kww (talk) 16:53, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Not true - there are some topics for which it has been agreed are inherently notable. The purpose of these proposals is to help in establishing what is and what isn't. Sebwite (talk) 20:21, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Inherent notability

[edit]

That essay is used as an excuse for sloppy editing and article creation. Article creation should always be done in order ... find sources, summarize sources, write article. People attempt to use the concepts of inherent notability and inherited notability as a short-cut to allow them to write about their own personal interests, such as asteroids, stars, roads, television characters, etc., without doing the work of actually creating an encyclopedia: reading sources, analyzing them, and writing the summary. Nothing is inherently notable, and nothing inherits notability: each and every article must be sourced, and be able to demonstrate that it's information was derived from those sources, not from the opinions and beliefs of the author.
Kww (talk) 11:13, 28 July 2008 (UTC) Amplifying ... the other thing that the concept of inherent notablity bypasses is that there are things that are simply unimportant. That's why WP:N requires a direct and detailed examination by multiple independent sources, because if no one else took the time, neither should we. Boven Bolivia is my favorite example: it's an abandoned farmhouse a few kilometers from my home. I had never heard it called by that name until someone decided it was inherently notable, and thus deserved an article. The problem is that there is absolutely nothing to say about it.
Kww (talk) 11:49, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Your August 5 removals from Template:GSVtable

[edit]

I've restored a number of cities and towns to the New Jersey section of this template. Please take a look at NJ in Street View; the template's previous suggestion that Newark is the only area covered is highly misleading. At least two counties have complete coverage, with significant portions or majorities of at least four more. Even in terms of population, the city of Newark accounts for perhaps 10-20% (a generous estimate) of the coverage area. Dppowell (talk) 06:31, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

I am well familiar with Northern Jersey. My family comes from that area. I know quite well the large number of cities and towns in the region. The only issue is that I had used the Rand McNally Road Atlas, which only displayed Newark. My best advice is to include not more than one city/town per county, with the county seat or largest city (if covered) preferred. Sebwite (talk) 06:35, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
