The Washington Yacht Club is located in Seattle, Washington on the main campus of the University of Washington. Their sailboats are located on Union Bay, at the Waterfront Activities Center. The club's purpose is to teach and promote sailing among students, staff and alumni of the University of Washington.

The club typically maintains from two to four keelboats, a few dozen sailing dinghies (single-handed, double-handed, catamarans & daysailers) and two to three motorized assist and instruction platforms.

It is maintained by four paid staff, 30-40 volunteer staff and averages 250 student & associate members. It conducts approximately 80 formal classes, numerous informal classes and a handful of regular sailing events every year.

HISTORY

[edit]

The Washington Yacht Club (formerly known as the “University of Washington Yacht Club” and then the “Washington Yacht Club at the University of Washington”) was formally established in May 1948. It continues to be located at the Waterfront Activities Center, adjacent Husky Stadium.

The lore goes that a few students noticed a tiny decaying dock in what was then a heavily wooded area adjacent the stadium and the former Navy hanger; the latter known today as the Canoe House. They decided to bring a small sailboat or two there and start a sailing club. They may have forgotten to mention this to the university.

The story continues that a few years later they decided the university should support them and boldly asked for a loan. The university is said to have responded with a, "What student sailing club on our property?" and briefly ended that foray.

Apparently the issue was quickly resolved and in 1948 the organization was formalized and received its desired support.

In 1970 it became an incorporated 501(c)3, in addition to retaining its status as a registered student organization at the University of Washington. It retains that registered student organization status in part by maintaining a superior number of University of Washington student members over associate members (staff, faculty and alumni) and in part by requiring that only students may vote or hold the three core officer positions (Commodore, Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore).

1948 - Club becomes a registered student organization
1949 - Ratings created: Crew, Skipper & Chief
1969 - Novice Rating Created
1970 - WYC becomes a 501(c)3 N50 nonprofit organization.
19xx - Moved the office out of the Canoe House and into the Husky Union Building
19xx - Moved the sail locker, sail loft and shop out of the Canoe House and into the newly built
          Waterfront Activities Center.
2012 - The undergraduate racing team, "The Sailing Team", formally separated from the
Washington Yacht Club, becoming its own registered student organization.

SNOOZE'N CRUISE

[edit]

Snooze'n Cruise is the Washington Yacht Clubs quarterly camping trip at Blake Island State Marine Park in Puget Sound.

Many boats go on Snooze'n Cruise, including all of the club keelboats, affiliate keelboats and private member keelboats. Keelboats tow dinghies, catamarans and day sailers through the Lake Washington Ship Canal and the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, then release them to enjoy the sail to the island.
