Christian James McLeish (born April 24, 2001), known by his gamertag Salty (stylized Salti or saltimane), is a Canadian professional competitor in Super Smash Bros. Melee, a crossover fighting game published by Nintendo for the GameCube in 2001. A native of Calgary, Alberta, McLeish is part of the AlphaX eSports team. McLeish is also a speedrunner, holding Top 10 in Crossy Road categories. McLeish primarily plays Marth and Falco, although he began his competitive career as a Yoshi main.

Career

[edit]

Rise to fame

[edit]

McLeish entered the smash scene by picking up Super Smash Bros. Brawl at an early date. After learning a lot of simple mechanics that could win him the game, he went on to become a top competitor around his hometown, alongside his brother, Matthew Campo. The two were best known as 'the brotherly rivalry' around the city, and their matches often ended with McLeish being beat 3-0 against his brother in finals. Although McLeish couldn't beat his brother, he was able to outplay several of the top Brawl players in his country, earning him a spot at the top of the list for best players.

Project M

[edit]

In mid 2014, McLeish picked up the popular Brawl modification, Project M. In January 2015, Salty entered a Project M tournament in which he didn't make it out of pools.[1] Since then, Salty has only attended one Project M tournament in which he got first place.[2] McLeish has not been seen at a Project M tournament since and is assumed that he retired from the game.

Melee

[edit]

After losing at Salt Flats 3 in 2015, Salty decided to pick up an old game that he didn't touch since his child hood, Super Smash Bros. Melee. With his previous tech skill knowledge from Project M, Christian quickly adapted to many players play styles and began to created a name of his own. He is well known for his fast reads and his ability to show off and embarrass his opponents.

Speedrunning

[edit]

Following a couple years of lack luster results, Salty has retired from Super Smash Bros. Melee and has decided to pursue a speedrunning and streaming career going forward. As of February 24, 2020, Salty holds top 10 and top 40 in the 50 Hops[3] and 25 Hops[4] categories for Crossy Road.

Personal life

[edit]

McLeish was born in Scottsdale, Arizona before moving to Calgary, Alberta. McLeish graduated from Bishop O'Byrne High School in 2019. McLeish says that his involvement in gaming kept him out of depression and gave him something to look forward to everyday. McLeish streams Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Mario 64, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Tetris 99, and other games on Twitch. Salty currently lives in Calgary, Alberta.
