This article is a list of notable fictional characters in Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic series.

Characters appearing in this series originate from three different sources, the video game series, television series, or were created specifically for the comic. From September 2013, the comic takes place in a new continuity[1], dubbed Post Super Genesis Wave, this resulted in a significant number of characters having their identity rewritten or simply ceasing to exist in the comic canon entirely.[2]

Main Characters

[edit]

Freedom Fighters

[edit]

The main protagonists of the comic are members of the Freedom Fighters, a group which debuted in the first issue of the series.[3] In the comic they are an organization of heroes dedicated to fighting against Dr. Eggman's villainy and helping people in need.[4]

Sonic the Hedgehog

[edit]

The lead character from which the comic draws it's namesake.

In the original continuity Sonic's initial motivation for joining the Freedom Fighters and battling evil was started by his homeland being taken over and his family getting turned into robotic slaves.[5] He would continue to stay with the Freedom Fighters in later stories, even after the initial problems set up at the beginning of the comic were resolved, having formed a deep friendship with his teammates during their shared experiences together over many issues.

Sonic's first and most enduring love interest in the series was Sally Acorn[6], having had an interest in each other present from the very beginning of the comic.[3] Their relationship had many highs[7] and lows[8], written with a Will They/Won't They dynamic that lasted throughout the first continuity. Sonic was also written with a multitude of other love interests who he dated during different periods of the comic.

Sonic's various comic book adventures have taken him to locations all over the world, through space and across many different dimensions.[5] Over many stories Sonic has collected a sizable rogues gallery[9], chief among them is his mortal enemy Dr. Eggman.

Post Super Genesis Wave Sonic is still part of the Freedom Fighters and remains battling his nemesis Dr. Eggman in the comic, his personality has remained largely intact; keeping a smug, heroic, yet breezy attitude towards life, but his personal history has been dramatically altered to make him more inline in the video game canon.[2]

Sally Acorn

[edit]

Princess Sally Acorn, also known as Sal, is a tan colored chipmunk and leader of the Freedom Fighters.[10] In the comic she is heir in line to the throne of the Kingdom of Acorn.

Sally's origin story had her as child witness the evil Dr. Eggman overthrow her father's kingdom and trap him within the Special Zone. She escaped Dr. Eggman's clutches and banded together with some of her childhood friends to make the Freedom Fighters, before the events of the comic began.[11] Her Pre Super Genesis Wave origin story was largely the same with minor differences.

In the series Sally's main role is as expert strategist and planner, chiefly responsible for coordinating the Freedom Fighters. Sally is highly intelligent, expertly trained in martial arts, and very independent, but at times she can be over emotional.[10]
