Pilar Corrias is the owner and director of the contemporary art gallery, Pilar Corrias, London.

Early Life

[edit]

Pilar Corrias was born in Rome, the daughter of Italian Ambassador Francesco Corrias and Frances de Villers Brokaw, a painter.[1] Corrias’ mother was the daughter of Frances Ford Seymour and stepdaughter of actor Henry Fonda.[2]

1990s

[edit]

In the early 1990s, Corrias studied MA courses in Art History at Columbia University New York, taught by Rosalind Krauss and Jonathan Crary.[3]

2000s

[edit]

In October 2008, Corrias opened her eponymous gallery in the heart of London’s West End.[4][5] Jo Craven said in The Telegraph that Corrias was one of only five female gallery owners of note in London.[6]

Corrias is a patron of the Chisenhale Gallery, Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), Serpentine Gallery, South London Gallery, and Artangel.[7][8][9][10][11]

[edit]

The 3,800 square foot gallery space on Eastcastle Street, West London was designed by the architect Rem Koolhaas.[12]

Since its inception, the gallery has worked with emerging and established artists with the central aim of allowing their work to grow both in terms of production of new projects and the making of new exhibitions.[13]

The inaugural exhibition October opened with a work by Philippe Parreno, a solitary cast-aluminium Christmas tree titled Fraught Times: For Eleven Months of the Year It's an Artwork and in December It's Christmas (October), 2008.[14]
