The Colorifics

[edit]

Started in 1994 in Vancouver, B.C., The Colorifics were founded by members Lindsey Davis, also known as Lily Frost, Jorge Diaz, Dave Lachance, and Bernie Boulanger. The band was named and photographed by Lincoln Clarke.

The Colorifics Band

Part of the cocktail nation lounge/swing revival scene on the West Coast, The Colorifics incorporated modern, sometimes naughty lyrics with 1960s style and rockabilly twang. Initially performing covers, the band transitioned to original music with Bernie and Lindsey as the primary singer-songwriters, Bernie being the main songwriter.

Jorge and Dave relocated to Seattle in 1995, where they became the rhythm section for Friends of Dean Martinez.

Though initially indie, The Colorifics eventually attracted attention from labels such as Arista, Hollywood Records, and Nepotism, but chose to remain independent.

The Colorifics were the inaugural band for the phenomenon known as The Blue Lizard Lounge, held at the Waldorf Hotel on the last Saturday of every month. Media darlings, they were credited with spearheading the cocktail nation revival in Vancouver, a popular counter to the grunge movement in the mid-1990s.

From 1996 to 1997, The Colorifics performed bi-weekly at The Showbox in Seattle and toured the West Coast highway circuit, covering Seattle, San Francisco, Oregon, Los Angeles, San Diego, and returning to Vancouver.

In 2007, Lindsey left the band to pursue a solo career under the name Lily Frost, signing with Nettwerk Music Group in 2000.

Bernie continued the band under the name The Colorifixs, collaborating with various singers who performed his songs. He eventually reverted to The Colorifics, continuing to perform around Vancouver to this day with various singers and John Rule on drums, who has been with him for over two decades.

Albums: Girlie Door, Guilty Pleasures, and Living City were released in the band's early years. Where There's Smoke was written during this period but released by Bernie under The Colorifics on Bandcamp in 2002.

A music video was shot and art directed by Lincoln Clarke and Alain Durenceau for the song Soda Pop, available on YouTube.

Related acts: Blue Lizard Lounge, The Molestics, Ray Condo, The Rattled Roosters, Combustible Edison, Les Minstrels, The Squirrel Nut Zippers, Pink Martini, Reverend Horton Heat.
