Jolteon, known as Thunders (雷) in Japan, is a fictional character in the Pokemon franchise. Jolteon is an electric-type Pokemon that evolves from Eevee when touched by a Thunder Stone; therefore, it is impossible to find it in the wild.[1] It was designed by Game Freak and finalized by Ken Sugimori in Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue. The word Jolteon is a combination of the words -jolt- and -eon-, related to electricity and the suffix all Eevee evolutions have (like Espeon, Vaporeon, Flareon, etc.), respectively. [2]

Jolteon also appears in Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Silver, Pokemon Crystal, Pokemon LeafGreen, Pokemon FireRed, Pokemon Pearl, Pokemon Diamond, Pokemon Platinum, Pokemon Black 2, Pokemon White 2, Pokemon X, Pokemon Y, Pokemon Pinball, Pokemon Trozei, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, and in the remakes Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver. [3]

Design and characteristics

[edit]

Jolteon is a mammalian Pokemon with four legs, covered in a yellow fur and a white mane around its neck.[2] In its Pokemon entry from Pokemon Black and Black 2, it says that when agitated it can use its electricity to straighten out its fur and attack with a barrage of missiles. It can have one of two abilities, “volt absorb” which heals up to ¼ of it's maximum Hit Points when hit with Electric-type moves or “quick feet” which increases its speed by 50% when induced with a status (burn, poison, sleep, frozen, and paralysis). Normally, if a Pokemon is paralyzed, its speed is cut in half; however, Jolteon's speed drop is ignored. [3]

In the first generation of Pokemon, Jolteon is one of the fastest Pokemon with incredible Special Stats. As an electric Pokemon, it is powerful against Flying or Water type and weak against other electric Pokemon. However, Electric-type moves are immune against Ground Pokemon, like Dugtrio, and weak against Dragon and Grass Pokemon. [1]

Appearances

[edit]

The first time Jolteon appeared was in the episode The Battling Eevee Brothers where Sparky was its trainer. The second time, Ash battled Jolteon in The Ultimate Test before entering to the Pokemon League. Another mayor appearance was in Get Along, Little Pokemon in which Ethan's Jolteon used Thunder Wave to lure back his Magnemite. In the Manga, Red's mutated Eevee evolves into Jolteon; eventually, it lost its ability to devolve and became Espeon. [2]

Reception

[edit]

IGN said “you won't be sorry that you trained this Pokemon” and called Jolteon “a keeper.” Also, according to IGN, Jolteon is ranked #36 on their top 100 Pokemon, Charizard leading the list. [1]

Trivia

[edit]

Both Jolteon and Electrike (another electric Pokemon) have the same species name, the Lightning Pokemon. [2]

Game Locations

[edit]

In Pokemon Blue, Yellow, Red, LeafGreen, and Fire Red, there is one Eevee that can be evolved to Jolteon located in the last floor of the Celadon Condominiums. In Pokemon Glod, Silver, Crystal, SoulSilver, the Pokemon Maniac Bill gives you an Eevee and you can also buy one in the Game Corner for 6666 coins, making the only games where the player can get unlimited Jolteon. In Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Eevee is a gift from Bebe after obtaining the National Pokedex and it is also obtainable in the Trophy Garden.[4]
