Atatürk, directed by Mehmet Ada Öztekin and produced by Saner Ayar and Cengiz Çağatay, is a Turkish historical period drama released in 2023. Starring Aras Bulut İynemli, the series depicts a segment of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's youth.
Originally planned as a Disney+ series, the project was later adapted into two films. The first, titled "Atatürk 1881 - 1919," aired on FOX channel on October 29, 2023, and premiered in Turkish cinemas on November 3. The sequel, "Atatürk II 1881 - 1919," was released on January 5, 2024.

Production
[edit]Yapımcı Saner Ayar ve senarist Necati Şahin projeyi oluşturdu ve Mehmet Ada Öztekin'e senaryoyu gönderdi.[2] Ön hazırlığı iki buçuk yıl süren yapımın çekimleri, bir kısmı Makedonya'da olmak üzere 19 hafta sürdü ve 5 Kasım 2022 tarihinde tamamlandı.[3] Çanakkale sahneleri üç buçuk hafta boyunca her gün gün doğarken ve gün batarken yaklaşık bin kişilik figüranla çekildi. Gemi ve donanmalar bire bir modellenerek bilgisayar tabanlı görüntülerle oluşturuldu.[2]
Producer Saner Ayar and screenwriter Necati Şahin created the project and sent the script to Mehmet Ada Öztekin. The production, which had a pre-production phase of two and a half years, lasted for 19 weeks, including some filming in Macedonia, and concluded on November 5, 2022. The scenes in Çanakkale were shot for three and a half weeks with approximately one thousand extras, every day from sunrise to sunset. The ships and fleets were modeled one-to-one and created with computer-generated imagery.
Release
[edit]The first trailer was released on October 28, 2022.[4]
The Atatürk project was initially planned as a film, but HBO requested it to be adapted into a TV series. HBO later withdrew from the deal, and it was decided to release the series on the Disney+ platform. On August 1, 2023, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) announced that it had launched an investigation into allegations that Disney+ had removed the series from its platform due to pressure from Armenian lobbies. On August 2, Walt Disney's Turkey office officially announced that the series, expected to be released on Disney+, would be broadcast as two films on FOX channel and in cinemas.
As part of the events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, it was announced that the shortened "TV special version" of the first film would be broadcast on FOX on October 29, 2023, followed by the theatrical release of the first film on November 3, 2023, and the second film on January 5, 2024. Both films will be broadcast on FOX in 2024.
Box Office Performance
[edit]"Atatürk 1881 - 1919" was watched by 269,113 viewers and earned 32.6 million ₺ in its first three days, making it the second-highest-grossing domestic film with the best opening of the year. It reached 750,120 viewers in its first ten days and grossed a total of 85.3 million ₺. It remained the most-watched film the following weekend, nearing 135 million ₺ in revenue. In its fourth week, it continued to top the box office, watched by over 1.365 million viewers, and earning 152.2 million ₺.
"Atatürk II 1881 - 1919" debuted in second place for the week, with 143,431 viewers and 20.7 million ₺ in revenue.
