Ceremony preparations

[edit]

His Majesty Al-Sultan Abdullah was unable to be coronated at his home state of Pahang after ascending the throne due to the short period between the date of the sultan and his appointment as Yang di-Pertuan Agong in just 2 weeks. Therefore, the Empress King was personally involved in the preparation of the ceremony to ensure the smoothness and privilege of the day.

Public holiday

[edit]

The Government of Malaysia has declared July 30, 2019 as an additional public holiday throughout Malaysia in conjunction with Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVI's Coronation Day. The declaration was made by the Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Bakar, under Section 8 of the General Holidays Act 1951 (Act 369) of Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan.[3]

Earlier, on May 30, 2019, the Pahang state government announced July 30 as a public holiday in conjunction with Al-Sultan Abdullah's Birthday. Following two different events that fell on the same day, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail in a statement issued by the Office of the Chief Minister of Pahang had said that the State Council Meeting on June 12, 2019 had determined that July 30 and 31, 2019, would be a public holiday. for the entire state of Pahang by virtue of the powers conferred under Subsection 9 (1) of the Holidays Act 1951 (Act 369).[4]

The throne and the heritage outfit

[edit]

For the first time in Malaysian history, both Majesty of Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong are the children of the late Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the late Sultan Ahmad Shah] and the 8th Sultan Iskandar. Therefore, both His Majesty, in particular the Raja Permaisuri Agong, wish to restore sentimental value by re-invoking the throne and royal outfit that they used during their father's death. Thus, the throne was brought back from the Royal Gallery of the King of Jaafar Negeri Sembilan to be transferred and refurbished for use in the Coronation Ceremony.[5] At the back of the couch are some sheets of old-fashioned palace cloth. The songket from Brunei is also booked by Tunku Azizah herself as the seat of the throne.[6]

The Muskat and the Royal Tengkolok belonged to the late Sultan Ahmad Shah at the time of his election as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1979 and had been lent to the late Sultan Iskandar for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong 5 years later. The late Sultan Iskandar did not booked Muskat and Tengkolok because he wanted to wear military uniforms as he often wore at formal events in Johor. However, Prime Minister, Dato 'Seri Dr. Mahathir, who had been present a week before the Coronation Ceremony begged him to wear a Muskat. However, this musket was not worn by Al-Sultan Abdullah because of its size difference but the new musket still has its own aesthetic while the official fashion design is similar to the one worn by the late Sultan Ahmad Shah.[5]

The dress of the Raja Permaisuri Agong was designed by fashion designer who had 15 years of experience in providing the outfit's designs for the Queen. Six of Tunku Azizah's outfit in conjunction with the ceremony include clothing from Pahang weavers made by occupants of Penor Prison and Bentong Pahang Prison which was insipired by herself and another 12 pieces for Tunku Azizah children. Rizalman maintains a modern rounded collar bracelet with a wrinkled shoulder that is his identity, as he styled it when he first saw it through the front cover of a magazine.[6]
