Dianne Smith (born August 28, 1965 in Bronx, NY) is a contemporary African-American artist of Belizean descent. Smith is an abstract expressionist painter, sculptor, and installation artist. Her work explores global socio-economic and political issues as it relates to race, gender and identity. Smith is an arts educator in the field of Aesthetic Education at Lincoln Center Education, a part of Lincoln Center For the Performing Arts, in New York City. Her teaching includes pre k-12 in public schools, as well as numerous colleges and universities throughout the Tri-State area such as: Lehman College, Brooklyn College, Columbia University Teachers College, City College, and St. John’s University.

Biography

Smith's work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in New York City’s Soho and Chelsea Art Districts as well as, galleries and institutions throughout the United States, and abroad. In 2007, She was one of the artists featured in the Boondoggle Film Documentary Colored Frames. The film took a look back at fifty years in African-American Art, and also featured artists such as, Benny Andrews, Ed Clark and Danny Simmons. That same year, the historical Abyssinian Baptist Church commissioned Smith to create the artwork commemorating their 2008 Bicentennial. In addition, she co-produced an online radio show the New Palette, for ArtonAir.org (Art International Radio) dedicated to visual artists of color.

Smith is a Bronx native. She attended LaGuardia High School of Music and Art the Otis Parsons School of Design and Fashion Institute of Technology. Smith completed her MFA at Transart Institute in Berlin, Germany. She currently lives and works in Harlem, New York.
