Hmmm. I can't seem to find the year this was published. Nezzadar 17:21, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The information here is grossly out of date. Johannesburg's official municipal population (excluding East & West Rand) is 3.2 million. The metropolitan area population is around 7.5 million, while the Gauteng City Region (including Pretoria & the Vaal) has a population of almost 10 million. Soweto is part of the official municipal area of Johannesburg, and should not be listed separately.

The information here is way out of date. Johannesburg has a city population going around 4 million currently, and metropolitan population of much more. Also, as the poster above said, Soweto should be included. Also, Durban is also way out of date. The city population is 3.5 million according to its wikipedia page, and I'm not sure about metro population but I'm guessing over 5 million. SeoxyS (talk) 12:06, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Improved List

[edit]

The list needs to be improved. This includes layout. I propose using an improved layout as follows:

Rank City Population (City Limits) Population (Metropolitan Area) Area (km²) Population density (/km²) Country
1 Lagos 8,000,000 10,000,000 787 1,380  Nigeria
2 Cairo 7,500,000 15,750,000 [1] 214 35,047  Egypt
3 Johannesburg 3,225,812 7,500,000 1,644 1,962  South Africa
4 Nairobi 2,940,911.[2] 4,000,000 684 4,230  Kenya
5 Abuja 1,320,000 1,814,000 713 2,544  Nigeria
6 Dakar 1,030,594 [3] 2,452,656 [3] 82 12,510  Senegal
7 Windhoek 230,000 250,305 645 357  Namibia

etc. The list also needs to provide more up-to-date and sourced information.

The problem is that a city like Lagos doesn't have an associated municipal government, so it has no "city limits" population unless you count the central municipal government, which is Lagos Island, and that only has over 200,000 persons. I guess for those cities that didn't have a "city limits" population you would simply leave it blank. --Criticalthinker (talk) 04:04, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lagos or Cairo most populous?

[edit]

Is Lagos or Cairo the most populous city in Africa? If I am clicking on either of those two cities, than both articles say that Cairo is larger. So why is Lagos number one on this list? --Robster1983 16:29, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, why? 70.245.158.169 (talk) 14:37, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
