T20 kit

MI New York (short for Mumbai Indians New York) is an American professional Twenty20 cricket team that competes in Major League Cricket (MLC).[1] The team is based out of New York City, New York, and was established in June 2023 as one of six inaugural teams to compete in the tournament.[2] The team has a minor league affiliate, the Manhattan Yorkers, which competes alongside 25 other teams in Minor League Cricket (MiLC).[3] The team is owned by Indiawin Sports, who also owns teams that compete in the Indian Premier League, SA20, and ILT20.[4] During the 2023 season, the team defeated Seattle in the finals to take home the inaugural title.[5]

The team plans to have their homeground built at Marine Park in Brooklyn, New York.[6] The park's cricket ground is set to have an expected capacity of 10,000 once completed.[7][8] The team is coached by former South African spinner Robin Peterson.[9]

History

Background

[edit]

In March 2023, it was reported that the Mukesh Ambani-owned Indiawin Sports would be the primary owner of Major League Cricket's New York franchise, called MI New York.[10] Nita Ambani later remarked in a press release that she was "thrilled" about the establishment of the team and the opportunity to introduce cricket to New York.[11]

2023 season

[edit]

MLC's inaugural domestic players' draft was held on March 19, 2023 at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, ahead of the start of the season on July 4.[12] The team picked, amongst others, American mainstays Steven Taylor and Monank Patel.

MI New York's full squad was released on June 14, with Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, New Zealand's Trent Boult, and South Africa's Kagiso Rabada all in the mix. The team also appointed West Indies' Kieron Pollard as their team captain.[13]

During the season, New York began their campaign with a 22-run defeat to San Francisco.[14][15] This was followed by a 105-run win over Los Angeles in their second game,[16] a 17-run loss to Texas in their third,[17] and a 8-wicket win over Washington in their fourth.[18] In their final group stage game, they lost to table-toppers Seattle by 2 wickets. Despite the loss, they nevertheless still qualified for the play-offs.[19] In the play-offs, New York recorded back-to-back victories against Washington and Texas in the Eliminator and Challenger matches, respectively, to go to the finals,[20] where they defeated Seattle to claim the inaugural title.
