Comhaltas in Britain or Comhaltas Breataine is a branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (Irish pronunciation: [ˈkoːl̪ˠt̪ˠəsˠ ˈcoːl̪ˠt̪ˠoːɾʲiː ˈeːɾʲən̪ˠ]; based in Britain. It is a charitable organisation[1] that promotes the preservation, learning and performance of Irish traditional music dance and culture activities, primarily through the Irish diaspora community in Britain.

History

[edit]

Comhaltas in Britain was founded in 1957 with the first branch outside of Ireland being established in Glasgow, where a community of Irish immigrants had settled.[2] The organisation became a registered charity in 2019 in England and Wales[1] and in 2024 in Scotland.[3]

Activities

[edit]

Comhaltas in Britain oversees the All-Britain Fleadh competitions, which is the stage before the Fleadh Cheoil in Ireland. The Fleadh is hosted each year by a different region in Britain: Scotland, Northern, Midlands, London & South. The winners from the All-Britain Fleadh will then go to the All-Ireland Fleadh to compete with other branches from around the world.
