As of the 2022 American Community Survey estimates, there were 3,822,224 people and 1,439,805 households.[1][2] The population density was 8,123.5 inhabitants per square mile (3,136.5/km2). There were 1,549,889 housing units at an average density of 2.5 per square mile (1.0/km2).[3][4][2] The racial makeup of the city was 32.5% White, 27.1% some other race, 12.0% Asian, 8.2% Black or African American, 1.3% Native American or Alaskan Native, and 0.1% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, with 18.7% from two or more races.[2] Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 47.8% of the population.[2]

Of the 1,439,805 households, 26.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 27.6% had seniors 65 years or older living with them, 36.7% were married couples living together, 8.7% were couples cohabitating, 23.6% had a male householder with no partner present, and 31.0% had a female householder with no partner present.[1] The median household size was 2.58 and the median family size was 3.35.[1]

The age distribution was 18.8% under 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 or older. The median age was 37.1 years.[5]

The median income for a household was $76,135, with family households having a median income of $86,380 and non-family households $57,068. The per capita income was $45,270.[6][7] Out of the 3,743,141 population with a determined poverty status, 16.8% were below the poverty line. Further, 22.1% of minors and 16.9% of seniors were below the poverty line.[8]

In the survey, residents self-identified with various ethnic ancestries. People of German descent make up 4.1% of the population of the town, followed by American at 3.7%, Irish at 3.7%, English at 3.6%, Italian at 2.8%, Russian at 1.5%, Sub-Saharan African at 1.5%, Polish at 1.2%, French at 1.0%, Arab at 0.9%, Scottish at 0.8%, Caribbean (excluding hispanics) at 0.5%, Ukrainian at 0.5%, and Norwegian at 0.5%.[1]
