Vergil from Devil May Cry 3

Vergil is a fictional character who is the twin brother of Dante and one of the two sons of the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda. His real name is Vergil, but was later changed to Nelo Angelo, which is the product of a transliteration error of "Nero Angelo" meaning "Black Angel" in Italian. Nelo Angelo is a boss featured in the video game Devil May Cry. Vergil appears in the prequel, Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening. Vergil is, like Dante, a hybrid. His lineage is divided between being half Devil and half human. This gives him abilities far beyond those of mortal men. Unlike his brother, he is more serious about his training, and is the better swordsman. He is also the opposite of Dante, with his cold and stoic demeanor, not to mention his slicked-back hair as opposed to Dante's wild and thrill-seeking demeanor and his uncombed hair (though when his hair is down, Vergil immediately ends up looking identical to his brother).

Vergil, son of Sparda

Although Vergil is not evil, his desire for more power has led to him turning his back on mankind and even his brother, Dante. At the end of Devil May Cry 3, Vergil plummeted to the lowest region of the Demon Realm after a frustrating defeat by Dante, and realized that Mundus was waiting for him. He decided ultimately that "it will be fun to fight the prince of darkness." However, due to the previous battle with Dante, he was weakened and thus was defeated by Mundus. As a result, he was subsequently brainwashed as the Dark Emperor's servant. This was how he became Nelo Angelo.

Vergil battles Dante three times in the 'Devil May Cry 3' storyline. Their first battle is on the highest level of Temen-Ni-Gru, also known as the Devil's Tower. Though Dante puts up a valiant effort, he is abruptly defeated by Vergil's might with the Yamato, his keepsake katana from Sparda. At the end, Vergil obtains Dante's amulet, the only memento left from his mother. Prior to the second fight, Vergil put an end to Beowulf, a blind wolf-like demon (he apparently lost his first eye to Sparda and his last eye in his battle with Dante) who hates the Sparda line with a vengeance, ever since he was defeated and sealed away two millennia ago by the Legendary Dark Knight. By doing this, Vergil acquired the Beowulf gauntlets and greaves, and a more powerful Vergil was born.

A heartfelt family reunion.

He had mixed in martial art moves along with his considerable skills with the Yamato. Dante's true Devil Trigger powers had been awakened, and this battle ended in a draw, before Arkham revealed his evil scheme. Lastly, their final battle was in the Demon Realm. Vergil had attained the Force Edge, the symbol of Sparda. His awesome might was but a trifle against Dante, who had awakened to justice, and realized he had to stop Vergil. The end of this battle's details can be found at the bottom of the last 2 paragraphs in the 'Origin' article.

Although they have a thorough dislike for each other at the beginning of Devil May Cry 3, there are indications that Dante and Vergil were once close and got along. The most significant example of this is at the end of the boss battle against Arkham in level 19 (as halfway through this fight, Vergil joined Dante). Just before defeating their enemy, Dante mentions a phrase they used to say together. They both utter the word, "JACKPOT!" and use Ebony and Ivory to eject Arkham out of the Demon Realm. It should be noted that Vergil normally doesn't use firearms since it is stated that he doesn't believe them to be a true warrior's weapons and upon grasping Ebony, he tells Dante that he shall "Try it your way for once."

Also, at the end of the last fight against Vergil, he tells Dante to leave the Demon Realm, and began to throw himself off of the waterfall they were battling on. Dante seems to show some reluctance in letting Vergil stay in the Demon Realm, and even made an attempt to reach out and grab his hand to prevent him from damning himself. A smiling Vergil used the Yamato to cut Dante's hand, and fell (he first did this near the end of their first fight, as Dante tried to take back his amulet. While he falls at the end of the game, it is shown briefly that Dante wouldn't have reached him anyway, given the distance between him and Vergil. As he thus had no real reason to cut Dante's hand, it is possible that Vergil simply did that as a way of saying goodbye, and leaving behind something for Dante to remember him by). Dante does however end up shedding a tear, for his seemingly lost brother. After returning to the human world, Lady says "Even a devil may cry, when he loses a loved one". It is suggested that the name "Devil May Cry" (Dante's demon-hunting shop) seems to be something of his way of memorializing Vergil (he also kept the halfglove he was wearing when Vergil cut him, with his blood still staining it). Ironicly it is subtly implied that the lost of a loved one led the events in the game, when at the end of Dante and Vergil's first duel Vergil tells Dante that "Without power you cannot protect anything, not even yourself". This is may be in reference to the death of their mother and further dialogue between the two include the topic of their father, Sparda, whom they both admired.

During the credits of the game, Dante is pitted against as many demons as you can kill before time runs out. Should you kill over 100 of them, a secret movie is unlocked. This shows Vergil rising to his feet on a lake of blood, and looking into the sky to see three large glowing orbs in a triangle (fans of the first Devil May Cry will know this is Mundus). Vergil then charges at the orbs with the Yamato ready.

Devil May Cry Weapons

In the first game of the series, Devil May Cry, Nelo Angelo wielded a huge sword, a zanbatō, almost twice the size of the one his brother uses. He also commands his former magical aura in the form of blue energy, possibly lightning. As Nelo Angelo, Vergil can adapt this power to take many forms, such as energy blasts, or concentrate it into spear-like projectile attacks, or various other abilities. The energy itself may also be a part of his armor, which allows him to teleport almost instantly from one location to another, albeit only for short distances.

Nelo Angelo has made an appearance in the Special Edition of Devil May Cry 3 as a playable character in the form of the Devil Trigger for two of Vergil's unlockable outfits: Corrupted Vergil and Super Corrupted Vergil (tentatively named such by fans), which are clad in the formal clothing of the Legendary Dark Knight's human form as seen in Devil May Cry. Given his power and the difficulty in unlocking them, beating Vergil's game on the Very Hard and Dante Must Die difficulty modes, he has become the goal of the special edition for many of its players.

Devil May Cry 3 Weapons

Vergil dual-wielding Yamato and Force Edge.

In Devil May Cry 3, he wields a keepsake tachi/katana sword named Yamato, given to him by Sparda. It is the same sword that the Legendary Dark Knight wields in Devil May Cry. Vergil does not use any handguns or any other kind of firearms. It is said he is reluctant to use them because he does not believe them to be weapons of a true warrior. Vergil clearly uses a variation of the sword form Iaido, where the sword is drawn quickly, strikes the opponent, cleaned of blood, and replaced in the saya. With Vergil's incredible speed and accuracy, his target is only affected by the strike when the sword clicks in place in its scabbard.

In the new Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition (Japan release: 2/23/2006, U.S. release: 1/23/2006), Vergil is a playable character and has been shown to be able to create energy sword projectiles that attack and fly towards the nearest enemy. These are officially known as Summoned Swords, with a more defensive formation (costing Devil Trigger energy) known as Spiral Swords.

Vergil in Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition

As mentioned before, Vergil is a playable character in Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition. You can play as Vergil by either beating DMC3:SE as Dante, or load a file from the original DMC3.

Basics: Vergil is somewhat similar to Dante in his actions, but he also offers a different experience. He only has one style to use, called DarkSlayer, which is similar to Dante's Trickster. Vergil's style is based on getting Vergil in and out of combat and is extremely effective when used in combination with his devil arms. It can also be used defensively to evade attacks, or to reach out-of-the-way areas otherwise inaccessible.

Moves with Dark Slayer Style:

Level 1: Air Trick - pressing "O" while an enemy is onscreen will result in Vergil doing a short teleport towards an enemy (usually the one that you are locked onto). One thing to note is that Dante also posseses this move when in level 3 trickster. Another thing to note is that this move can be used while not holding R1 to lock onto an enemy. This allows you to teleport to an enemy of your choice, simply by pressing the control stick in the direction of the desired enemy and pressing "O".

Level 2: Trick Up - While locking onto an enemy, press forward on the control stick and "O" to execute this move. Vergil will teleport to a spot directly above where he is standing. This is a good move to get away from a projectile attack, or to follow up an attack that sent an enemy in the air. One thing to note is that you can jump before you execute this move to gain extra height, and you may also use a regular dash move after you use this move (effectively using both in one sequence).

Level 3: Trick Down - While holding R1, press back on the analog stick and press "O" to teleport downwards and backwards from the air. The true usefulness to this move is that it grants you a back dash while already on the ground, so figuratively speaking, someone who has mastered all the teleporting moves could avoid all damage.

Vergil's Melee Weapons

Vergil has three Devil Arms, available from the first level. Although you still have to buy the stronger attacks, such as Judgement Cut, Round Trip, and Rising Sun, Vergil is very dangerous with these legendary weapons. At any point in the game he can switch between these using L2 or R2. Now for a short briefing on the Devil Arms:

Yamato: This is Vergil's keepsake katana from Sparda. It is a dangerous and fast weapon, said to cut through anything. It has a move called 'Judgement Cut' where Vergil unsheathes the Yamato with such speed, it releases a series of slashes in the form of many purple orbs at a distance. This weapon has the element of "darkness". This means that light based enemies will take more damage. You can tell when an enemy is affected by this "darkness" because when you attack an enemy, you will see a faint purple light. There are 2 known enemies in the game that are particularly affected by this: the fallen (the angel looking enemies) and Beowulf, the boss encountered in mission 11

Beowulf: These are light element gauntlet and greaves. Vergil gains them upon cutting off Beowulf's head, and absorbing his soul. Vergil utilizes martial-art attacks, such as roundhouses and dropkicks. This weapon is the powerhouse in Vergil's arsenal, and tends to deal the most damage per hit than other weapons. It also has the element of "light". This elemental affliction is particularly affective against Hell Vangaurds and Doppleganger.

Force Edge: Fans of the original Devil May Cry will recognize this weapon. This is the symbol of Sparda, the broadsword Force Edge. When Vergil uses it he combines his moves with the Yamato moves, and dualwields the two weapons. He also can unleash moves identical to Dante's Rebellion attacks.

Long Range Weapons

File:SummonedSwords.jpg
Vergil utilising Summoned Swords and Judgement Cut in DMC3:SE.
Unlike his twin brother Dante, Vergil has a philosophical disdain for firearms, as he believes melee weaponry (notably the sword) are the only tools of a true warrior. Interestingly, in the Devil May Cry novel, he visited Goldstein, the "old lady" gunsmith who made the twin handguns Ebony & Ivory, and bought a sawed-off shotgun similar to the ones in the video game series; however, the novel's story may not be considered as canon because it was written before Devil May Cry 3. In Devil May Cry 3 itself, he has no such personal firearm; he does have a long range attack, however: summoned swords. These ranged magic blades made their debut in the original Devil May Cry, utilised by Vergil's alter ego Nelo Angelo. There are a variety of different ways these swords can be applied:

Summoned Swords: These are the deadly phantom images of the Force Edge, the sword wielded by the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda. By pressing square, a phantom sword will appear around Vergil's shoulders. After a short delay, it will rush forward at high speed directly ahead; if you are holding R1 simultaneously, it will rush at the targeted enemy. Pressing square rapidly will increase the rate at which they are fired. The ability starts at level 1, where the rate of fire is fairly low, but it can be upgraded to level 3, at which point they will be fired very rapidly. Something to note about Vergil's summoned swords: You may summon swords while using melee attacks on enemies, by pressing Triangle and Square simultaneously

Spiral Swords: This is a secondary application of the Summoned Swords ability that you may purchase for a hefty 20,000 red orbs. Pressing and holding square will summon 4-6 swords that surround you in a circluar formation, pointing out. Activating Spiral Swords costs 2 Devil Trigger orbs. They will spin around your body like a shield, damaging anyone who comes into contact with them. When these hit an enemy, they will eventually deteriorate and disappear. While they are around your body, however, you have a few options (if you do not choose to just let them hit an enemy):

1. Press square, releasing one of the phantom swords from its defensive formation and firing forward (or at a targeted enemy, if R1 is held simultaneously). They can be released even faster if you press square rapidly.

2. While locked onto an enemy, pull back and press square. This will cause all of the swords around Vergil's body to appear over his head, then shoot all at once towards an enemy. While this may sound impressive, it is not any better than just pressing square multiple times to just fire all of the swords. In Devil May Cry, Nelo Angelo used this attack to deadly effect during Dante's third encounter with him.

3. While locked onto an enemy, press forward and square. The swords will disappear, then reappear surrounding the enemy for a few seconds, after which they will all strike simultaneously. This is a great way to take out troublesome enemies while focusing on the smaller foes. In Devil May Cry, Nelo also used this attack to try and eviscerate Dante during his third encounter. In Devil May Cry 3, Vergil uses the same attack in Dante Must Die mode on mission 20.

Philosophy and Speculation

One may notice that Dante and Vergil share their names with Dante Alighieri and Publius Vergilius Maro, poets of epic works. In Dante Alighieri's work The Divine Comedy, Dante (the author) is guided through Hell by Virgil (the Roman poet), and Heaven by Beatrice Portinari, Dante's idealistic vision of the perfect woman. Both sons of Sparda mirror the characters in the poem; Vergil as Nelo Angelo continuously confronts Dante as he delves further into Mundus' castle (Hell), egging him on and drawing him closer to Mundus himself. Trish can be seen as a parallel to Beatrice, his saviour that helps Dante finally defeat Mundus and escape the castle. Mundus can be viewed as Satan, trapped at the center of his castle, and some of the enemies and areas in the game could be seen as metaphors for the concentric circles of hell and their populaces described in Alighieri's work.

Devil May Cry 4

Vergil could play a part in Devil May Cry 4, but no official stament from Capcom has been confirmed. However, it's likely that Vergil will be an intergral part of the next game in some form.
