Adam Richard Wiles (born 17 January 1984), better known by his stage name Calvin Harris, is a Scottish singer, songwriter, record producer, remixer and DJ. His debut album, I Created Disco, was released in 2007 and was the precursor to his top-10 singles "Acceptable in the 80s" and "The Girls". In 2009, Harris released his second studio album, Ready for the Weekend, which debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and earned a gold certification from the British Phonographic Industry within two months of release. Its lead single, "I'm Not Alone", became Harris's first number one on the UK Singles Chart.

Harris rose to widespread international prominence in 2012 with the release of his third studio album, 18 Months. Topping the UK charts, the album became his first to chart on the Billboard 200 in the US, reaching number 19. All eight of the album's singles; "Bounce", "Let's Go", "We'll Be Coming Back", "Sweet Nothing", "Drinking from the Bottle", "I Need Your Love", "Thinking About You" and "Feel So Close", along with "We Found Love" reached the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart, making it the first album in history to have eight top-10 singles.

Harris has collaborated with numerous other recording artists, including Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora, LMFAO, Florence Welch, Ellie Goulding, Ne-Yo, Cheryl Cole and Gwen Stefani. His collaboration with Rihanna led to two singles, "Where Have You Been" and "We Found Love". The latter became an international success, giving Harris his first US number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. Harris released his fourth studio album, Motion, in November 2014. It debuted at at number two in the UK and number five in the US, and became Harris's second consecutive number-one album on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart. The album's first three singles—"Under Control", "Summer" and "Blame"—all topped the UK Singles Chart, giving him seven UK number-one singles.

Harris holds the record for the most top-10 hits from one studio album on the UK Singles Chart with nine hits, surpassing Michael Jackson. In October 2014, he became the first artist to place three songs simultaneously on the top 10 of Billboard's Dance/Electronic Songs chart.[5] Harris has received seven Brit Award nominations—two for Best British Male, and four Grammy nominations, winning a Grammy for Best Music Video in 2013. He received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year in 2013 and at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards was named Top Dance/Electronic Artist. Additionally, Harris topped Forbes' list of the world's highest-paid DJs for three consecutive years from 2013 to 2015.

Early life and career

Adam Richard Wiles was born on 17 January 1984 in Dumfries, Scotland.[6][7] His English parents, David Wiles, a biochemist, and Pamela, a homemaker, married in Oxford before moving to the Dumfries suburb Georgetown.[8] He has an older sister, Sophie, and an older brother, Edward.[8][9] He attended Dumfries High School, and after leaving school he stacked shelves in supermarkets and worked in a local fish processing factory in order to buy DJ gear.[10][11]

He was first attracted to electronic music in his teens and was recording bedroom demos by 1999.[12] When Harris was 18 he released two songs "Da Bongos" and "Brighter Days". Both were released as 12-inch club singles and CD-EPs by the label Prima Facie in early 2002 under the name "Stouffer".[13] With these singles to his credit, Harris moved from Scotland to London, hoping to learn from the local music scene.[11][13][14] Only one of his songs was released during his time in London, "Let Me Know" with vocalist Ayah Marar on the Unabombers' 2004 live-mix CD Electric Soul, Vol. 2.[13] With the lack of job opportunities and money, Harris returned home to Dumfries and began posting homemade solo recordings to his MySpace page.[13][15]

Music career

2006–08: Career beginnings and I Created Disco

Harris signed contracts with Three Six Zero Group (management), EMI (publishing) and Sony BMG (recording) in 2006 after he had been discovered on the social networking website Myspace.[16] Later in 2006, Harris produced a remix of All Saints' hit single "Rock Steady".[17]

Harris's debut album, I Created Disco, was released in June 2007. The album contains uptempo electroclash songs that were influenced by music from the 1980s. To promote I Created Disco, Harris embarked on a tour of the UK, supporting Faithless and Groove Armada.[18][19] I Created Disco was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for sales of 100,000 copies in the UK, where it reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart.[20][21]

The first single, "Vegas", was issued on limited edition vinyl; the first wide-release single from the album was "Acceptable in the 80s", a tribute to the style and culture of the decade. The song reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart, remaining on the chart for 15 weeks.[21] "The Girls", the album's third single, peaked at number three in the UK, although the fourth release, "Merrymaking at My Place", only reached number 43.[21]

The same year, Harris caught the attention of Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue after his recordings had been passed on to her by another record producer.[18] This led to him co-writing and producing two songs on her 2007 album X—"Heart Beat Rock" and "In My Arms", the latter a top-10 hit in the UK. Harris said that working with Minogue was "surreal, but fun" although he admitted to Mixmag in 2007 to "needing a few drinks before meeting her".[22] On 18 October 2008, Harris was featured on BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix with a two-hour set.[23] In 2007, Harris contributed the song "Off & On" to Róisín Murphy's album Overpowered, but it was cut from the album; Harris would later give the song to Sophie Ellis-Bextor to record for her 2011 album Make a Scene. Harris also produced a remix of Dragonette's debut single "I Get Around" that was rejected by the band. In 2007, Kelis discussed plans to work with Harris on her then-upcoming album, although this did not materialise.[24] Harris did, however, produce a remix of Flesh Tone's second single.[25]

In 2008, Harris collaborated with rapper Dizzee Rascal on his single "Dance wiv Me", producing the track and singing the hook. The single reached number one in the UK and has been certified platinum by the BPI, selling 600,000 copies.[20] It was shortlisted for the 2008 Popjustice £20 Music Prize and, in 2009, received a Brit Award nomination for British Single and an Ivor Novello Award nomination for Best Contemporary Song.[26]

2009–10: Ready for the Weekend

In April 2008, Harris stated that the only existing copy of his then-upcoming album, which he had been working on for seven months, was lost when the bag containing his laptop was misplaced during the baggage handling problems at the opening of London Heathrow Terminal 5.[27] In an interview with Popjustice in April 2009, Harris admitted that while he did lose his bags at Heathrow, he lied about the laptop being in his luggage in order to buy himself some more time to finish recording the album, adding that the idea was concocted by him and his sound engineer.[28]

The album, Ready for the Weekend, was released in August 2009[29] and debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, eventually being certified gold by the BPI within two months of release.[20][21] "I'm Not Alone", released as the album's lead single in April 2009, debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart and was shortlisted for the Popjustice £20 Music Prize. The follow-up single, "Ready for the Weekend", reached number three.[21] Another track on the album, "Worst Day", features Izza Kizza.[30]

Harris toured around the UK, Ireland, France, the Netherlands and the US promoting the album. In June 2009, Harris appeared at the Summertime Ball at the Emirates Stadium in London, home of Arsenal F.C., and in August, he made an appearance on the first Soccer AM show of the season on Sky Sports. The third single from Ready for the Weekend, "Flashback", featuring Jordanian singer Ayah Marar reached number eighteen in the UK, and the fourth, "You Used to Hold Me", reached number 27.[21] During promotion of the album, Harris hosted a series of videos on YouTube titled JAM TV, in which musicians such as Florence Welch, Goldie and Katy Perry tried to open pots of jam.[31] At the 2010 Brit Awards, Harris received a nomination for Best British Male.[32]

Later that year, he produced Dizzee Rascal's next single titled "Holiday", which also reached number one.[33] Also in 2009, Harris made a guest appearance on Tiësto's song "Century" on the Dutch producer's album Kaleidoscope.[34] On 14 November, Harris invaded the stage of the UK's The X Factor during a performance by Irish duo Jedward, holding a pineapple on his head and bending over to point at his buttocks. He was subsequently escorted from the studio by the security team and ejected from the ITV2 programme The Xtra Factor, where he was due to appear as a guest the same night. He later apologised on Twitter.[35] The same week, Harris spoke to The Chris Moyles Show on BBC Radio 1 and revealed that he had been "inspired to make a mockery of the show", adding, "If you look at music it's a frightening stranglehold that Simon Cowell has got over the entire music chart in the UK at the moment."[36]

Harris claimed that Chris Brown's "Yeah 3x" plagiarised his 2009 single "I'm Not Alone". Harris tweeted, "Choked on my cornflakes when I heard [the] new Chris Brown single this morning. Do you know what I mean?"[37] Having considered similarities between the two songs, Harris was subsequently added to the songwriting credits on the single and the F.A.M.E. album.[38]

Harris played at the 2010 Big Day Out, a music festival which takes place in several major cities in Australia and Auckland, New Zealand. In May 2010, he performed at Evolution Festival in Newcastle upon Tyne, and in July he played at Splendour in Nottingham and headlined at the Stockton International Riverside Festival in Stockton-on-Tees. In July 2010, Harris released a mix, titled L.E.D. Festival (short for L.E.D. Festival Presents... Calvin Harris).[21]

Harris appeared at the 10th birthday of Our:House in Auckland, New Zealand, in November 2010, alongside Afrojack,[39] and performed an hour-long DJ set at Australia's Steresonic Festival alongside Tiësto, Carl Cox, Afrojack, and Major Lazer in November and December 2010, in several major Australian cities including Sydney and Melbourne.

2011–13: 18 Months and international prominence

In 2011, Harris toured with Rihanna as a support act on the European leg of her Loud Tour; Rihanna was quoted to say that "Calvin is the perfect fit for the Loud tour. He is going to bring something unique and fun for the fans."[40] Harris played the 2011 Mardi Gras Party in Sydney on 5 March.[41] During March and April 2011, Harris was scheduled to be an opening act and DJ for Katy Perry during her California Dreams Tour, but he withdrew from the tour shortly before his first date, citing production issues and difficulties with Perry's management in his apology to her fans.[42] Harris also featured on LMFAO's album Sorry for Party Rocking, appearing on the track "Reminds Me of You", which is based on Harris's own song "Awooga". Harris produced Tinchy Stryder's second single, "Off the Record" from his fourth studio album, Full Tank. The track had its première on 15 September 2011, and was released in the UK on 6 November 2011.[43][44]

Harris headlined Limelite at Metropolis Fremantle in Western Australia in March 2011 in celebration of the event's fourth birthday, where he played small samples of his new track, "Awooga", which was subsequently uploaded onto YouTube via his channel.[45] Following "Awooga", Harris released the single "Bounce", a collaboration with Kelis that debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart in June 2011.[21] Another single, "Feel So Close", was released in August 2011 and also reached number two in the United Kingdom.[21] "Feel So Close" became Harris's first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, peaking at number 12.[46] Harris performed at the 2011 Jingle Bell Ball concert, and was announced as one of the headline acts at a number of Southern Hemisphere 2011/2012 new year music festivals, including Shore Thing and Field Day in Sydney, as well as Rhythm and Vines in New Zealand.[47]

Following a stint as her support act on the Australian leg of her tour, Harris produced "We Found Love" and "Where Have You Been" for Barbadian singer Rihanna. The former was included on Harris's upcoming album 18 Months, and premiered on Capital FM radio in the UK on 22 September 2011. "We Found Love" topped the charts in 27 countries worldwide, including the UK where it became Harris's third UK number one, peaked in the top 10 in 30 countries, and broke many records worldwide.[21][48] Topping the Billboard Hot 100 for ten non-consecutive weeks, it was Harris's first US number one, and was also Rihanna's longest-running US number one and the longest-running number one of 2011.[49][50] The song was later named the 24th biggest hit of all time on the Billboard Hot 100.[51] In an interview for Q magazine, Harris said of the lyric "We found love in a hopeless place": "It could have been Jumpin Jaks in Dumfries (Harris' home town), I don't know exactly what I was thinking about."[52] In 2013, "We Found Love" was placed at number three on Billboard's top 10 dance-pop collaborations of all time.[53]

Harris co-wrote and co-produced the bonus track "One Life" for R&B singer Mary J. Blige's album My Life II... The Journey Continues (Act 1) (2011).[54] He also worked with the pop band Scissor Sisters on the single "Only the Horses" from their fourth studio album, Magic Hour. He wrote and produced Cheryl Cole's single "Call My Name", the lead single from her third album A Million Lights.[55]

"Let's Go" featuring Ne-Yo, released in April 2012, also reached number two in the UK Singles Chart.[21] It was his second US Billboard Hot 100 appearance as a main artist, charting at number 17.[46] The song received a nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 55th Grammy Awards which was held in February 2013. The album's fourth single "We'll Be Coming Back" was released in July 2012. Featuring rapper Example, it peaked at number two in the UK, and reached number one in Ireland. The fifth single, "Sweet Nothing", features Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, and was released on 14 October 2012.[56] It peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart and at number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[46] The song received a nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 56th Grammy Awards.[57] These singles became part of his third studio album, 18 Months, which was released on 29 October 2012. Harris has said of the album, "I'm going for pretty epic-sounding dance records. I guess the whole sound has just moved on in terms of production as I've got a new studio and some new gear to make the sounds I wasn't able to make before."[58] Harris eventually made UK chart history by becoming the first artist to attain eight top-10 hits from one studio album, breaking the record previously set by Michael Jackson.[2] 18 Months received a nomination for Best Dance/Electronica Album at the 56th Grammy Awards.[57]

Harris was the house DJ at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards held at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, where he won Best Electronic Video for "Feel So Close" and Video of the Year alongside Rihanna for "We Found Love".[59][60] The success of 18 Months (with a record breaking nine singles from the album reaching the UK top 10) saw Harris nominated a second time for Best British Male Solo Artist at the 2013 Brit Awards in February.[61] Harris performed as part of the post-race concert of the 2013 Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix in April 2013.[62] At the 2013 Ivor Novello Awards held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London in May, Harris received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year, with Harris calling it "easily the greatest achievement of my entire life".[63]

2013–present: Motion

On 7 October 2013, Harris and Swedish DJ Alesso released a collaborative single with synthpop duo Hurts called "Under Control" as the first single from his fourth album.[64] The song debuted at number one in the UK.[65] Later that month, Harris remixed The Killers' song "When You Were Young" for the deluxe edition of their greatest hits album Direct Hits.[66] He unveiled the full six-minute version through Rolling Stone and told the magazine: "It was a real honour to be asked to remix one of my favourite modern bands, and it was an exciting challenge for me to update this classic track for the dance-floor in a tasteful and respectful way".[67]

On 14 March 2014, Harris's song "Summer" premiered on the UK's Capital FM.[68] The track which was released as the album's second single debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Harris's sixth UK number-one single.[69] It also became Harris's highest-charting solo single on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number seven.[70] "Summer" was Spotify's most-streamed track of 2014 with over 200 million streams, earning Harris somewhere around $1.5 million.[71]

In April 2014, Harris performed on the main stage of Coachella Festival.[72] His set attracted the second largest crowd in the festival's history, topped only by the 2013 set of Doctor Dre and Snoop Dogg which featured a hologram of Tupac Shakur.[72] That year, Harris was also a headline act at several prominent music festivals, including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits Music Festival, the iTunes Festival in London, Electric Daisy Carnival and the iHeartRadio Music Festival.[71]

The third single was Harris's collaboration with vocalist John Newman which was titled "Blame".[73] It was released in September 2014 to positive reviews from music critics and debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, giving Harris his third consecutive UK number-one single (and his seventh overall).[74] Later that month, Harris uploaded an instrumental track called "C.U.B.A." to SoundCloud.[75] "Outside", the fourth single from the album, featuring Ellie Goulding, was released in October 2014.[76] It marked the second collaboration between Harris and Goulding, following the internationally successful single "I Need Your Love" from 2013.[76] The instrumental track "Slow Acid" was released as a promotional single from the album on 14 October 2014.[77]

His fourth album, Motion, was released on 4 November 2014.[78] It includes the previously released singles "Under Control", "Summer", "Blame" and "Outside".[21] Another track from the album, "Pray to God", featuring rock band trio Haim, was released on 11 February 2015.[79] At the 2015 Brit Awards, "Summer" was nominated for Best British Single and British Artist Video of the Year.[80]

At the 2015 Glamour Awards in London on 2 June, Harris was named Glamour UK's Man of the Year.[81] He was also ranked 6th on Billboard's Top 30 EDM Power Players.[82] The same month, Harris was part of the main stage line-up at the Electric Daisy Carnival held in Las Vegas.[83]

On 17 July 2015, Harris and London-based production trio Disciples released the single "How Deep Is Your Love".[84] The song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, giving Harris's his 19th top-10 hit in the UK.[85][86] It peaked at number one in Australia, giving Harris his first chart topper in that country. [87] The song debuted at number five on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs and marked Harris's eighth top-10 hit since the chart's launch, making it the most of any act.[88] Additionally, the song debuted at number four on Dance/Electronic Digital Songs and at number six on the Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs.[88]

Endorsements

In 2009, Harris tied up with Coca Cola for their 'Open Happiness' advertising campaign in the UK.[89] Harris wrote and produced an exclusive track for the brand called 'Yeah Yeah Yeah, La La La' which was featured on TV, digital, outdoor and on-pack promotional activity and was offered on 'Coke Zone' website for free download.[89][90] The same year, Harris's song "Colours" was featured in Kia Motors's hamster television advertisement for the Kia Soul EV.[91]

In 2012, Harris was featured in the Pepsi Max commercial for their Football campaign.[92] Titled "crowd surfing", the advert showed Harris on the DJ deck playing his single "Let's Go" to the crowd of partygoers alongside star footballers Lionel Messi, Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, Frank Lampard, Sergio Aguero and Jack Wilshere.[92] In 2013 Harris teamed up with Sol Republic to create their first studio tuned professional-calibre headphones.[93] The partnership went beyond a simple customised look for headphones and involved redesigning its drivers to Harris’s specifications.[94]

On 17 December 2014, Harris was announced as the new face of Giorgio Armani for its men's underwear line for the Spring/Summer 2015 season. He was also named the worldwide testimonial of the Emporio Armani eyewear and watch collection.[95] The black and white campaign was shot in Los Angeles by photographer Boo George.[96] Harris returned as the face of the brand underwear line, eyewear and watch line for their Emporio Armani Fall/Winter 2015/2016 campaign. The images, shot by Lachlan Bailey were released on July of the same year.[97]

Business

In February 2013, Harris signed as the first exclusive resident DJ with the Abu Dhabi-owned hospitality company Hakkasan Group in Las Vegas. The 20-month residency saw him playing 46 dates at MGM Grand's Hakkasan nightclub, as well as 22 additional gigs at the MGM Grand’s Wet Republic.[98] In January 2015, Harris extended his partnership with the Hakkasan group for three more years which includes residencies at three of the group's Las Vegas venues (Hakkasan nightclub, Wet Republic and Omnia Nightclub at Caesars Palace). Harris also serves as the Group's music consultant for its restaurants, nightclubs and hotels, globally.[99][100]

On 30 March 2015, Harris was announced as a co-owner, along with various other music artists, in the music streaming service Tidal. The service specialises in lossless audio and high definition music videos. Rapper Jay Z acquired the parent company of Tidal, Aspiro, in the first quarter of 2015.[101] Including Beyoncé and Jay Z, 16 artist stakeholders (such as Kanye West, Beyoncé, Madonna, Chris Martin, Nicki Minaj and more) co-own Tidal, with the majority owning a 3% equity stake.[102] The idea of having an all artist owned streaming service was created by those involved to adapt to the increased demand for streaming within the current music industry, and to rival other streaming services such as Spotify, which have been criticised for their low payout of royalties.[103]

In September 2007, Harris performed in the charity event "Wasted Youth" in aid of the Campaign Against Living Miserably at KOKO nightclub in Camden Town, London.[104] The event aimed to draw attention to the issue of youth suicide among men in the UK and to raise awareness and money for the charity.[104] In 2008, he supported Shelter's campaign "Hometime Scotland" which pledges to end homelessness and bad housing in Scotland.[105][106] In 2010, Harris performed live in The War Child's post-Brit Awards show (alongside La Roux and Kasabian) which took place at the Shepherd's Bush Empire, London.[107] The event raised funds and public awareness on children affected by violence in war zones.[107][108]

In February 2012, Harris teamed up with several other artists (including Rihanna and Coldplay) to perform at a charity concert with all proceeds from the show going to the Children’s Orthopaedic Center at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles.[109] In November 2012, Harris contributed several songs to Tiësto's compilation album Dance (RED) Save Lives in collaboration with anti-AIDS charity Product Red which was aimed at creating awareness on the fight for an AIDS Free Generation.[110][111] Harris participated in a global live stream of the Stereosonic music festival in Melbourne, Australia which took place on World AIDS Day on 1 December 2012.[110] The proceeds from both the album and the event were donated for the cause.[110]

Personal life

Forbes began reporting on Harris's earnings in 2013, calculating that he earned $46 million between May 2012 and May 2013, for his music, tour and his residency in Las Vegas which placed him as the highest-paid DJ of the year.[112] In 2014, Harris came in at number one on the list again for the second consecutive year with a total of $66 million in annual earnings.[113] In 2015, Harris topped the highest-paid DJs list for a third consecutive year, having earned $66 million over the previous 12 months.[114] On The Sunday Times Rich List published in April 2015, Harris was ranked the 30th richest British millionaire in music, with a personal fortune of £70 million ($105 million).[115][116]

Harris began dating British singer Rita Ora in May 2013.[117] The two collaborated together on her single "I Will Never Let You Down". They broke up in June 2014.[118] In March 2015, Harris started dating American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift.[119][120] By June 2015, the duo were ranked as the highest-paid celebrity couple over the past year by Forbes with combined earnings of over $146 million.[121]

Harris is a teetotal.[122] He has abstained from drinking alcohol since he was 24, stating that "I wasn't an alcoholic or anything like that, but it was clearly affecting what I do."[123]
