Mafi was born into a strongly Catholic family. His father and grandfather were [[catechist]]s. He grew up in Tonga and, as a young man, he joined a youth group at his parish in [[Kolofo,ou]] near the capital [[Nuku,alofa]] on the main island of [[Tongatapu]]. Soane Patita Paini Mafi (born 19 December 1961) is the current Roman Catholic Bishop of Tonga.[1] On 4 January 2015 it was announced that Mafi, along with 14 others, would to be elevated to the rank of Cardinal. He will be formally inducted into the College of Cardinals on 14 February 2015[2] and will then, at the age of 53, be the youngest member of the Sacred College of Cardinals.[3]
