A song that started off as "kind of a joke" propelled Auckland synth pop duo Kids of 88 into a surreal global adventure. But they nearly gave the music business away, band member Jordan Arts tells Tom Fitzsimons.

HOW DO you go from being layabout Auckland students to being feted by major record labels on a month-long US tour?
Simple. Write a song like My House, the catchy, raunchy dance tune penned by Kids of 88, a young Auckland duo whose debut album, Sugarpills, comes out next week.
These days, the song's accompanied by an equally steamy video, featuring girls gyrating in slow motion as they're showered in various shades of paint.
But when it was written, a couple of years ago, it was much more basic than that.
