The following is a list of some of the notable alumni of St Peter's College, Auckland.

These notes are based on information available in the publicly-available sources in the notes and list of reference sources. Every effort has been made to ensure that the entries are accurate. However, some of the birth years given are deduced from circumstantial material (for example when a person left St Peter's from the most senior class, it is reasonable to assume that they were 17 or 18 at that time).

Arts, Entertainment, Media and Sport

  • Glen Babich (b. 1965): Artist; his final year at St Peter's College was 1981 when he left with University Entrance.[1]
  • George Baloghy (b. 1950), Artist, (since 1978 has had more than twenty-five solo exhibitions, represented in every major public collection in New Zealand).[2]
  • Barney Clarke (b. 1926): Champion boxer; New Zealand Amateur Light Heavyweight champion 1947 and 1948; New Zealand Professional Light Heavyweight Champion 1949.[7]
  • Robert Courtenay: participated in the 1982 Paraplegic Olympics in Hong Kong in the 100 metres and 200 metres Wheelchair Sprints for which he won gold medals and set world records. [8]
  • Cyril Eastlake (1930-2007), Rugby League international, played Back position, St Peter's College's first international footballer; member of the the Kiwis from 1951; appeared for "the Kiwis" in 79 games including 28 tests; in 1954 he was the captain of the New Zealand team at the first Rugby League World Cup competition in France; inducted into the New Zealand 'Legends of League' in 1995, an acknowledgement of the skills he brought to the game during an international career that ran from 1951 to 1960.[11]

  • Dr Mark Houlahan (b. 1960): MA (1983) Auck, PhD Toronto ; Senior Lecturer in English at Waikato University; lectured in Hamilton (Ontario) and Waterloo and, whenever possible, performed in plays - Medieval, Renaissance, and Modern; research interests are Apocalpse, Shakespeare, Renaissance drama, Milton, English Civil War print culture, New Zealand print culture.[13]
  • Michael Houlahan (b. 1961),: B. Com (1985) Auck; Senior Journalist in print media; Head Prefect at St Peter's College 1980.[14]
  • Jonathan Rowland Alleyne Hunt (b. 1943): BA (1979) VUW; Language and Literature Scholar; won the Taylor Cup for Languages at St Peter's College in 1960, especially for his aptitude in Latin.[16]
  • Graeme Jennings (b. 1978): International, freelance, Photojournalist; has taken photographs of dislocated people in Azerbaijan, Chechnya and Bosnia; at school, he was a keen painter but "I wasn't a good painter, I didn't enjoy physics and so opted to do photography in my last year" at St Peter's; studied photography at Unitec; collaborated with photographer Neil Farrin on a book called New Zealand, the millennium : the shadowcatchers (working on the photographs and the text) and "my career went on from there"; in late 2008 he is in the United States to cover the presidential election.[19]

  • Terry Locke (b. 1946) Ph.D (Auck) (on American poetry), Associate Professor at Waikato University: lecturer in English at Auckland University 1970 - 1976 and 1980 - 1983; In 1971-2 he was a visiting Research Fellow at Yale University; after a total of 12 years secondary school teaching, which included roles as both a HOD English and HOD Drama, he joined the staff of Waikato University in 1997; teaches English/Language Education in the Arts and Language Education Department at Waikato University.[28]

  • Hugh Joseph McGahan (b. 1961) MBE (1990 for services to Rugby League), New Zealand 1990 medal, Former New Zealand Rugby League representative 1982 - 1990, captain of the "the Kiwis" 1986 - 1990.[35]
  • Professor Constant Mews (b. 1953), D. Phil (Oxon), Professor of Medieval Thought, Director, Centre for Studies in Religion and Theology, Monash University, Melbourne, (expert on medieval religious thought (especially Peter Abelard) and on interfaith dialogue); he won the Trenwith Cup for History at St Peter's College in 1971.[38]

  • Stephen (Steve) Roche (b. 1961): MA (Hons) (1985) Auck; Musician, Composer, Vocalist; has composed for and been recorded for many new Zealand made films (is this the correct Steve Roche?).[50]
  • Peter Saili (b. 1989): representative rugby player; junior All Black 2007 and 2008; member of the team which won the International Rugby Board's junior world championship 2008.[52]
  • Ashley Gordon Toms (b. 1959): B.Mus, Dip. Mus (1982)Auck: Concert Pianist, specialising in duo or chamber works; lives in Indiana, USA; has over 700 duo/chamber works in his repertoire; he is sought after as a collaborative musician throughout the Midwest of the United States.[56]

  • Brian James Blacktop (1937 – 2007) LL.B (1963, Auckland); Solicitor; spent entire 48 year career in the Public Trust, Assistant Public Trustee (1973 – 1981); Deputy Public Trustee (1981 - 1999); Head Prefect and Dux of St Peter's College 1954.[62]
  • Chris Carter (Honourable Christopher Joseph) (b. 1952), MA(Hons)(History) (1982) Auck , New Zealand Labour Party politician, Member of Parliament for Te Atatu (1993-1996; 1999-present), Minister of Conservation (2002-2007), Minister of Housing (2002-2007), Minister of Ethnic Affairs (2002-present), Minister of Education (2007-present), and Minister for the Education Review Office (2007-present) (He was New Zealand's first openly Gay MP, and first openly Gay member of the New Zealand Cabinet).[64]

  • Geoffrey Clatworthy: Retired Stockbroker; former partner of stockbroking firm, Buttle Wilson & Co; in 1970 he was Australian Manager for UEB Industries; past President and Chairman of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and past Chairman of the Enterprise NZ Trust; member Finance Advisory Committee of the Cancer Society of NZ Inc in 1992, and was later Chairman from 1995-2002; President of the Cancer Society Auckland from August 2006.[67]

  • Sir (Humphrey) Michael Gerard Fay (b. 1949), (Knight Bachelor -1990), New Zealand Merchant banker, co-founder/joint chief executive and director of Fay, Richwhite and Co Ltd, chair of the campaigns for three New Zealand challenges for the America's Cup in 1987, 1988 and 1992[81].
  • Nicholas Kenneth Fisher (b. 1949), LL.B Auck, Solicitor; specialisling in banking, Financial and Commerial matters; Head Prefect at St Peter's College 1967.[82]
  • Brett Gould (b. 1956): LL.B (1979) Auck, MBA (Distinction) Massey; Queenstown Solicitor; he won the trenwith cup for history in 1973.[84]
  • Professor Garth Alexander Harris (1947-1999): LL B (hons) (1973) Auck, MJur (Distinction)(1978) Auck; Associate Professor of Law at University of Auckland; he specialised in tax law; he was head of the Department of Commercial Law at Auckland University 1995-1998; he was also Director of the Master of Taxation Studies programme "for nearly a decade and was responsible for its development and evolution"; his particular area of specialisation was international tax " ... and he wrote the leading text in the area New Zealand's International Taxation published by Oxford University Press in 1990; his final text was Income Tax in New Zealand: " ... sadly Garth passed away [from cancer] in late 1999 and did not see [it's publication]", it being completed by other authors; he was also the founding editor of the New Zealand Journal of Taxation Law and Policy ; Ian Eagles, Professor of Commercial Law wrote: "[Garth Harris] ... guided successive cohorts of masters and honours students through their thesis and dissertations not only with rigour but also patience, compassion and gentle humour. In everything he did Garth was decent, straightforward and unassuming. He was content to let his work speak for him. Garth was one of New Zealand's leading tax scholars and the country's foremost writer and thinker on international taxation. He was responsible for the emergence of taxation as a serious subject for postgraduate study in his own University. Garth's reputation in the legal and accounting professions was immense"; Garth Harris was in Form VIA (Year 13) at St Peter's College in 1965, in that year he won the Taylor Cup for Languages.[85]
  • Devon Hern (1928-1990): a foundation pupil (?) and important old boy of St Peter's College; he ran the wine and spirits side of Campbell & Ehrenfried; he was General Manager of New Zealand Wine and Spirits Ltd[86] from 1966 until the 1980s (?) (under managing director Douglas Myers) (the latter company later became a subsidiary of Lion Breweries); Devon Hern was chair of the St Peter's College 25 years jubilee committee in 1964; he assisted with the purchase of the "the cage" field and pavilion site in 1959.[87]

  • Judge Richard Kearney (1931-2005): District Court Judge, Auckland; gave the keynote speech at the St Peter's College 50th jubilee dinner in 1989; member of the Waitangi Tribunal 1996-2004; was presiding officer in respect of important Waitangi tribunal enquiries: Tauranga Moana (Wai 215); Flora and Fauna (Wai 262); and the Wananga Capital Establishment Claim (Wai 718); he was also the chairman of the Indecent Publications Tribunal and a member of that body.[97]
  • Brian Paul Keene (b. 1947) LL.B (Hon) Auck, QC: Lawyer; practises at the Auckland commercial bar; specialises in the areas of professional liability, director’s obligations, securities law and insolvencies and is an arbitrator and mediator and Takeovers Panel Counsel.[98]
  • Michael Law (b. 1948),BA Auck, DipEdSt Waikato, EdM Rutgers; Senior Lecturer, Waikato University, Industrial Relations & Human Resource Management Programme, Department of Societies and Culture; research interests include union membership and workforce change in the dairy industry, and union organising models; teaching interests include comparative labour studies, worker education and training, and theoretical issues in contemporary labour studies; was President of the Auckland University Students' Association 1974 (?).[102]

  • Joe Moodabe (b. 1937), Royce Moodabe (b. 1940?) and Michael Moodabe (b. 1943?) - these three brothers (sons of Michael Joseph Moodabe who with his brother, Joseph, had formed Amalgamated Theatres in 1928) held key management positions in Amalgamated Theatres from the 1960s to the 1980s; and then in Hoyts; in 1997 Joe Moodabe joined Village Force Cinemas " ... which he built it into the country's biggest cinema chain".[116]

  • Bishop Dennis George Browne CNZM, DD, (b. 1937), ordained as a Priest of the Diocese of Auckland in 1962[144]; third Catholic Bishop of Cook Islands and Niue (1977-1983), tenth Catholic Bishop of Auckland (1983 – 1994), second Catholic Bishop of Hamilton (appointed 1994).
  • Father Maurice Carmody (b. 1946): Entered the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) in February 1963; ordained preist in that order on 23 May 1970; in 2008 a Priest of the Archdiocese of Wellington; academic, historian; Doctorate in Church History (Gregorian University, Rome (1988)); Former Vice-President of the Franciscan Institute of Spirituality and former Professor of Franciscan History, Pontificio Ateneo of St. Anthony (the Antonianum), Rome; former lecturer in Church History, Beda College and the Dominican Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), Rome; Parish priest and administrator, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Wellington (2005-2008); Acting Parish Priest, Kaikoura (2008); Acting Parish Priest, Queenstown (2008)(??); Parish Priest, Stoke (2008 - ).[146]
  • Father Martin De Leeuw ofm cap (b. 1956): ordained priest for the Capuchin Franciscans at Holy Cross Church, Henderson, 8 December 1984; he attended St Peter's College 1967-1972; he studied Technical Drawing in particular; he was working as a design draughtsman in Wellington where he became associated with the Capuchins in the Northland parish.[152]
  • Father Paul Farmer (b. 1948): Priest of the Diocese of Auckland, educated at St Peter's College 1960 - 1966; principal of Nukutere College, Rarotonga 1988 - 1995(?); National Pontifical Missions Promoter for New Zealand until 2006; Parish Priest at St Dominic's, Blockhouse Bay until 2009; Parish Priest at St Benedict's Newton from January 2009.[156]

  • Father Pierre Denzil Meuli (b. 1932) DD Rome, LL.B (1977) Auck , a Priest of the diocese of Auckland: ordained in Rome in December 1956 after completing his doctorate; in 1969 he was appointed editor of the Zealandia by Archbishop Liston in controversial circumstances following the sacking of two previous editors (Father Ernest Simmons and Patrick Murray); Reid calls him a "very conservative" appointee; since the 1980s Father Meuli has had the care of the Mount St Mary "non-geographic" parish in Titirangi where the "traditional Latin liturgy" is followed.[144][168]
